AI Redefines Dead Sea Scrolls Timeline

Artificial intelligence is redefining the timeline of the Dead Sea Scrolls, with new research suggesting some texts are up to a century older than previously believed. This innovative use of AI offers fresh insights into ancient history, though some experts remain cautious about the full implications of these findings.

In the desolate, sun-baked caves of the Judean Desert, a silent revolution is underway, not with pickaxes and brushes, but with algorithms and artificial intelligence.

The Dead Sea Scrolls, those enigmatic parchments that rewrote our understanding of ancient Judaism and the nascent stirrings of Christianity, are once again yielding secrets, this time thanks to an unlikely partnership between cutting-edge technology and time-honored historical inquiry.

What’s emerging is a picture that suggests many of these foundational texts might be significantly older than we’ve long assumed, pushing back their genesis by as much as a century.

Discovered serendipitously by Bedouin shepherds in 1947, the thousands of fragments collectively known as the Dead Sea Scrolls have always been a source of profound fascination.

They contain the earliest known texts of the Hebrew Bible, offering an unparalleled glimpse into a pivotal period of human history.

For decades, scholars meticulously pieced together their narratives and attempted to date them, generally settling on a timeframe stretching from the third century BCE to the second century CE.

But now, Mladen Popović, a dean at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and lead author of a recent study published in PLOS One, is challenging that consensus.

His team’s work, combining traditional radiocarbon dating with a sophisticated AI program named Enoch, points to some of the earliest scrolls originating as far back as the late fourth century BCE.

The challenge of dating these ancient manuscripts is formidable.

Very few bear explicit dates, and even the reliable method of carbon dating faced an unexpected hurdle: in the 1950s, some fragments were treated with castor oil in a well-intentioned but ultimately counterproductive attempt at preservation, thereby interfering with accurate radiocarbon analysis.

Popović’s team navigated this by first carbon-dating a selection of untreated manuscripts, then using those results to train their AI, Enoch.

When tested on 135 undated manuscripts, Enoch’s estimates aligned with scholarly consensus 79% of the time, a promising indicator of its potential.

For Popović, this technological leap is akin to unlocking a new dimension in historical research.

He speaks of the scrolls as a “time machine,” offering tangible evidence of what people were reading, writing, and thinking thousands of years ago.

“Whether you’re Christian, Jewish or don’t believe at all,” he told CNN, “the Bible is one of the most influential books in the history of the world, so the scrolls allow us to study it as a form of cultural evolution.”

The ability to refine their dates, he argues, deepens our understanding of this evolution.

His excitement is palpable, especially when he suggests that the Enoch tool allows them to “study the hands that wrote the Bible,” hinting at a profound connection to the original scribes, and even claiming that two biblical scroll fragments now date to the time of their presumed authors.

Yet, as with any groundbreaking claim in a field as venerable as biblical archaeology, caution is the prevailing sentiment among some seasoned experts.

Christopher Rollston, a professor of biblical and Near Eastern languages and civilizations at The George Washington University, acknowledges the study’s interest and importance but stops short of calling it “Earth-shattering.”

He points out that many of the new conclusions align with what distinguished paleographers like the late Frank Moore Cross had already posited over six decades ago.

Rollston reserves particular skepticism for Popović’s assertion about studying “the hands that wrote the Bible.”

He argues that such a statement is “at the very least, gross hyperbole,” reminding us that no manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible date to the First Temple period (when the Bible was originally composed) or even the early parts of the Second Temple period.

The scrolls, while ancient and invaluable, are copies, not the original compositions penned by the biblical authors themselves.

Rollston’s critique extends beyond the sensationalism, touching upon a deeper philosophical question about the role of technology in humanities.

He stresses that while machines can be helpful in isolating specific features of a script, human handwriting, with its inherent variations and idiosyncratic features, remains “a deeply human thing.”

For him, the discerning eye of a gifted paleographer is at least as valuable as, if not more so than, a machine-learning tool.

Brent Seales, a computer science professor at the University of Kentucky who was not involved in the study, echoes this sentiment of cautious optimism.

He finds the approach rigorous despite its relatively small sample size but agrees that AI in this context is “like a fine wine” – it will only truly mature and improve with time and the inclusion of more samples.

This dialogue between revolutionary technological ambition and scholarly pragmatism is precisely what makes the ongoing study of the Dead Sea Scrolls so compelling.

The AI-driven re-dating of these fragments is not just a technical achievement; it’s a fresh lens through which to view the very foundations of Western civilization.

It underscores that even the most ancient texts are not static artifacts but dynamic sources of knowledge, continually revealing new layers of meaning as our tools for inquiry evolve.

The scrolls, it seems, continue their whispered conversation with humanity, now amplified by the silent, powerful hum of artificial intelligence, promising an endless frontier of discovery for generations to come.
