The scenario was chillingly simple: a man traversed a street, pulling the dummy in his wake.

Crucially, the setting included a stopped school bus, its flashing lights and extended stop sign serving as universal signals for caution.

Yet, the Tesla, ostensibly a beacon of future mobility, reportedly passed the bus and did not halt for what was undoubtedly a “surprise pedestrian activity.”

For many, this was not merely a test, but a disturbing prophecy.

The optics are undeniable.

A vehicle marketed as the pinnacle of autonomous driving, one that promises to navigate the complexities of urban environments without human intervention, appeared to falter in a situation that demands immediate and unequivocal recognition from any driver, human or machine.

While Tesla enthusiasts were quick to label the stunt an “ambush” and invoke the “laws of physics” to explain the car’s momentum, the broader public, and indeed, city officials, are grappling with the implications.

If a system cannot reliably detect and react to a child-sized object near a stopped school bus, a scenario ingrained in every driver’s education, then what confidence can be placed in its ability to safely ferry passengers through the unpredictable chaos of a bustling city?

Austin City Council member Vanessa Fuentes wasted no time in articulating this growing apprehension.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), she reposted the viral video with a blunt assessment: “If your ‘Full Self Driving’ can’t avoid hitting a child at a school bus with flashing lights and a stop sign, you have no business launching robotaxis anywhere.”

Her words cut to the heart of the matter, challenging the fundamental premise that a system still demonstrating such apparent vulnerabilities is ready for widespread public deployment, especially in a service as critical as urban transportation.

The online discourse surrounding the video has been predictably polarized, a microcosm of the broader societal debate around autonomous technology.

Critics piled on, one user grimly correcting, “Hit and then DROVE OVER,” emphasizing the severity of the incident.

Another, dripping with sarcasm, quipped, “Kid should have been watching where he was going,” a chilling echo of victim-blaming that perhaps unintentionally highlights the very real dangers involved.

On the other side, Tesla loyalists defended the technology, arguing the setup was unfair, an engineered failure.

“This was an ambush,” they claimed, suggesting the system was not designed to handle such deliberate provocations.

Yet, this defense raises its own set of uncomfortable questions.

If “Full Self-Driving” is truly to live up to its name, shouldn’t it be capable of responding to the unexpected, the unusual, even the intentionally provocative?
