Bitcoin Miners Turn to AI

Facing reduced rewards after the Bitcoin halving, many miners are pivoting to artificial intelligence to secure new revenue. This strategic shift is reshaping the industry, with companies adopting diverse approaches from full transformation to cautious diversification.

The digital gold rush, once solely focused on the intricate puzzles of Bitcoin mining, has undergone a profound transformation.

As the Bitcoin halving of April 2024 loomed, slashing block rewards to a mere 3.125 BTC, miners found themselves at a critical crossroads.

The siren call of artificial intelligence, with its insatiable demand for high-performance computing, offered a tantalizing, if untested, alternative.

Some dipped a cautious toe into these new waters; others plunged headlong, repurposing vast data centers, securing billions in credit, and forging ambitious partnerships.

The question now echoing through the digital canyons is: how has this high-stakes gamble truly paid off?

For some, the AI pivot has been nothing short of a lifeline, a desperate bid for survival that has yielded unexpected dividends.

Core Scientific stands as a testament to this phoenix-like resurgence.

Having declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late 2022, the company emerged from the financial ashes in early 2024, relisting on Nasdaq with a radically altered vision.

No longer a pure Bitcoin miner, Core Scientific repositioned itself as a colocation service provider, leasing its robust data centers to AI powerhouses.

The crowning achievement of this strategic shift was a monumental 12-year, $3.5-billion deal with CoreWeave in June 2024 to host its high-performance computing operations.

While Core Scientific’s Q1 revenue did fall significantly, from $179.3 million to $79.5 million, a direct consequence of the halving and its operational pivot, the market’s reaction has been overwhelmingly positive.

News of CoreWeave’s renewed acquisition talks, following a failed $1-billion bid in 2024, sent Core Scientific’s stock soaring, underscoring the market’s belief in its AI-driven future.

Yet, for many established players, AI remains a calculated side hustle, a strategic hedge rather than a complete metamorphosis.

Hut 8, a familiar name in the crypto mining space, exemplifies this cautious diversification.

Its AI ambitions materialized in September 2024 with the launch of Highrise AI, a subsidiary offering GPU-as-a-Service.

The deployment of over 1,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, the workhorses of modern AI, signaled a serious commitment.

A five-year fixed-payment and revenue-share deal accompanied the launch, providing a crucial revenue stream as Bitcoin mining margins tightened.

Despite posting a significant quarterly net loss of $134.3 million in Q1 2025 and a sharp drop in Bitcoin production (167 BTC compared to 716 BTC year-on-year), CEO Asher Genoot framed it as the cost of deliberate investments, highlighting a 79% increase in hashrate.

Crucially, Hut 8 maintains a formidable Bitcoin treasury of 10,273 BTC, the ninth-largest publicly listed corporate holding, allowing it the luxury of a gradual transition.

Its recent $220-million raise by majority-owned subsidiary American Bitcoin, partly founded by sons of former President Donald Trump, further solidifies its commitment to expanding its core mining business, proving that for Hut 8, AI is a valuable addition, not a replacement.

However, a growing segment of miners are seeing AI evolve from a mere experiment into a tangible, albeit still modest, revenue stream.

Australian miner Iren (formerly Iris Energy) began acquiring Nvidia GPUs in early 2024, quickly securing its first AI contract by February.

By mid-2025, it had deployed approximately 4,300 GPUs.

While Bitcoin production continued to climb, with 1,514 BTC mined in Q3 fiscal year 2025, its AI cloud revenue independently surged by 33% to $3.6 million.

Iren’s ambitious plans include a liquid-cooled AI data center in Texas and a purpose-built site in British Columbia capable of housing 20,000 GPUs, signaling a strong belief in the sector’s future.

It’s worth noting, however, that even forward-looking ventures face hurdles, as evidenced by a class-action lawsuit alleging Iren misled investors about its Texas facility’s readiness.

Similarly, Hive, which rebranded from Hive Blockchain in mid-2023 to emphasize its focus on Nvidia-powered compute clusters, has seen its AI revenue triple.

Following initial small-scale deployments, Hive invested $30 million in December 2024 to expand its GPU operations in Quebec, Canada, deploying over 5,000 units by mid-2025.

For its 2025 fiscal year, AI and HPC hosting contributed $10.1 million to its total revenue of $115.3 million, now accounting for nearly 9% of the pie.

Hive is boldly targeting $100 million in AI revenue by 2026, demonstrating a clear commitment to this growing segment.

Then there are the titans, like Riot Platforms and MARA Holdings, whose sheer scale and vast Bitcoin treasuries afford them a different kind of strategic flexibility.

Holding 19,225 BTC and 50,000 BTC respectively, they are among the largest corporate Bitcoin holders globally, making them less desperate for immediate AI revenue.

Instead, they are laying the groundwork for a post-mining future, exploring AI and HPC workloads with a long-term vision.

Riot, for instance, began evaluating the conversion of up to 600 megawatts at its massive Corsicana, Texas facility into high-performance infrastructure in early 2025, even pausing further Bitcoin mining buildout there.

While it hasn’t signed major AI contracts yet, the sheer potential of its 355-acre, 1-gigawatt site positions it to attract hyperscaler clients down the line.

MARA, too, has rebranded its broader strategy as an “edge computing” play, piloting HPC test sites equipped with its innovative 2PIC700 immersion cooling system.

For these giants, the AI pivot is less about immediate cash flow and more about future-proofing, a testament to their deep pockets and strategic foresight.

Finally, in a market largely enamored with the AI dream, one company stands as a stark reminder that not all follow the herd.

ASIC manufacturer Canaan, a smaller player in the global mining hardware market, announced in July 2025 that it was shutting down its AI chip division.

With just 2.1% of the global ASIC market, Canaan has chosen a distinct path: to double down on its core competency—mining hardware—and pursue long-term resilience in North America.

This contrarian bet highlights the diverse strategies at play in a sector grappling with rapid technological shifts and evolving economic realities.

The Bitcoin halving acted as a powerful catalyst, pushing an entire industry to innovate or perish.

The AI pivot, far from being a monolithic movement, has manifested in a spectrum of approaches – from urgent lifelines to cautious hedges, from growing revenue streams to strategic groundwork, and even a complete rejection.

The journey is complex, fraught with both promise and peril, but one thing is clear: the landscape of digital asset infrastructure is being irrevocably reshaped, driven by the relentless march of technological progress.
