In a groundbreaking move that marks a pivotal moment in the sustainability landscape, CARBIOS, a biotech powerhouse dedicated to transforming the lifecycle of plastics, has announced its first multi-year biorecycled PET sales contracts with two giants of the cosmetics world: L’ORÉAL and L’Occitane en Provence.

This landmark agreement not only underscores the burgeoning demand for sustainable packaging solutions but also heralds a new era in the cosmetics industry’s approach to environmental responsibility.

Founded in 2011 by Truffle Capital, CARBIOS has established itself as a pioneer in the development and industrialization of biological technologies aimed at combating plastic and textile pollution.

Their innovative approach utilizes enzyme-based processes to break down plastics, thus facilitating a circular economy where materials are continuously recycled and reused.

The company’s strides in biorecycling of PET and biodegradation of PLA have not only brought them scientific acclaim, including features in the prestigious journal Nature, but also positioned them as a leader in the quest for sustainable industrial practices.

The contracts, signed for the biorecycled r-PET from CARBIOS’s forthcoming commercial plant in Longlaville, France, signify a crucial step forward in the company’s strategic execution.

The plant is set to become a beacon of innovation in the recycling industry, with construction anticipated to restart between June and September 2025, contingent on securing necessary funding.

Vincent Kamel, CEO of CARBIOS, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “The signing of these two initial commercial contracts with L’ORÉAL and L’Occitane en Provence, two demanding leaders, marks a key milestone for CARBIOS. It validates the brands’ demand and confirms the existence of an established market for r-PET derived from enzymatic recycling.”

Kamel’s confidence is buoyed by the strong momentum CARBIOS has garnered, which he believes will soon lead to additional contracts for their Longlaville site.

L’ORÉAL and L’Occitane en Provence, both renowned for their commitment to sustainability, view these contracts as pivotal to their own environmental goals.

Jacques Playe, Director of Development and Packaging at L’ORÉAL, highlighted the significance of this collaboration: “This contract with CARBIOS underlines our commitment to working with innovative players in PET recycling to create a circular economy.”

Similarly, David Bayard, R&D Packaging Director at L’Occitane en Provence, emphasized the partnership’s impact on their sustainability journey, noting, “The partnership we have established with CARBIOS marks a decisive step for L’Occitane en Provence in our commitment to greater circularity in our packaging.”

This development is a testament to the increasing shift among global brands towards sustainable practices.

The cosmetics industry, notorious for its environmental footprint, is under significant pressure to reduce its impact.

By integrating biorecycled PET into their packaging, L’ORÉAL and L’Occitane en Provence are not only meeting circularity and quality objectives but also setting a precedent for others in the industry to follow.

Beyond cosmetics, CARBIOS’s influence stretches across various sectors, including food and beverage, where they collaborate with industry titans like Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo, and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe.

In the textile arena, their partners include brands such as On, Patagonia, PUMA, PVH Corp., and Salomon.

These collaborations highlight the widespread applicability and necessity of CARBIOS’s technologies in advancing a circular economy across industries.

However, the journey is not without its challenges.

The competitive and rapidly evolving nature of the industry means that CARBIOS must continuously innovate to stay ahead, and the realization of its strategic goals hinges on numerous factors, including securing additional funding and navigating potential risks in the market.

As CARBIOS continues to forge ahead, the implications of its work are profound.

This biotech company is not only redefining the plastic lifecycle but also challenging industries to rethink their environmental strategies.

The contracts with L’ORÉAL and L’Occitane en Provence are just the beginning.

With a commitment to using business as a force for good, CARBIOS is poised to lead the charge towards a more sustainable future, one biorecycled bottle at a time.
