Recent research has shown that emotional intelligence (or EQ for short) can have profound impacts in your life, both at work and outside of it. While some people may feel these benefits more than others, there is growing evidence to suggest that those with higher levels of EQ are better paid, achieve greater success, and live longer than individuals who are less emotionally intelligent.

There are several different theories about why this might be the case, but all agree that having high-level emotions such as empathy, anger control, and self-awareness helps you relate well to other people and encourages socialization. These qualities help you understand what motivates people and influence their actions towards you, which can only benefit your career.

While most experts will agree that education and training can increase your level of EQ, making an effort to practice them daily is much more effective. This can be done through interacting with other people, educating yourself about various aspects of emotion, or by simply taking time to think about how you felt before and after certain situations.

Beware though, while practicing mindfulness exercises can boost your overall mental health, studies show that being able to identify and describe your own feelings is one way to develop your EQ.

Factors that affect emotional intelligence

e.q. emotional intelligence

There are several theories about what makes someone have high emotional intelligence (EI). These theories focus on different factors, such as personality traits, early experiences, socialization, genetics, and more.

Everyone has certain qualities that make them feel emotionally intelligent or not. For example, people who are socially aware often consider how to help others in difficult situations. They are able to recognize emotions in other people and use this information to motivate them to do things.

Other qualities include understanding your own feelings and being willing to address them. When you are conscious of your emotions, you can be better at predicting future behavior and acting accordingly. This also means having a good sense of humor, because laughing helps reduce stress and tension.

There is some evidence to suggest that parents play an important role in developing their children’s EI. Parents with higher levels of empathy are likely to develop children with higher levels of empathy.

Genetics may also influence whether you are born with lots of emotion sensitivity or not. However, culture and environment still play a big factor.

The five elements of emotional intelligence

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing emphasis placed on what is being referred to as “emotional literacy or intelligence.” This term seems vague at first, but when broken down into components it makes sense.

Emotional literacy refers to our ability to recognize, understand, and control our emotions. It is also known as emotion regulation or self-control over one’s emotions.

We all have different levels of emotional literacy depending on how well we regulate our emotions. We can be in very high demand jobs with little exposure to stress and still not use effective strategies for regulating your own feelings.

It is important to note that although this element focuses on managing individual emotions, it actually goes much deeper than that.

In fact, some experts believe that emotional literacy is only half of the equation. The other half is understanding why certain emotions occur and what role they play in helping you succeed.

This is because many times we feel bad thoughts about something or someone before we even realize what is making us unhappy.

By identifying the source of these negative thoughts, you will be able to prevent them from leading to more unproductive behaviors or actions.

How to be more emotional intelligent

e.q. emotional intelligence

Overcoming your emotions is like lifting a heavy weight- it takes effort, but once you do, you can accomplish so much!

Many experts agree that we are all born with a certain level of emotional intelligence (EI). We develop our EI as we grow up, through experiences, interactions, and lessons learned from others.

Some people remain emotionally intelligent throughout their lives while others lose touch with their inner feelings.

It’s very common for people in this country to put on an impressive facade to protect themselves from how they feel. It’s easy to play the part when everything around you is telling you to keep calm and carry on.

But eventually, your fake self will overflow and you’ll get something done that you’ve been avoiding for weeks. You’ll snap, and things will escalate quickly.

Take control of your emotions

e.q. emotional intelligence

Let’s look at some examples.

I have a friend who is very emotional. She can be pretty dramatic at times. I will sometimes find myself getting annoyed with her, but then I try to remember that she only means well.

She just needs to learn how to regulate her emotions.

So instead of being angry about something, she should try thinking about all the good things that she has done. Or maybe think about what you would like to do next time she does this thing.

Or perhaps it’s better if she doesn’t do this certain thing in the first place because there are always other ways to achieve her goal.

It takes a lot of work to develop self-control, but it is possible. And it is especially important for people who are in creative professions or public service jobs where they interact with lots of different people every day.

In those situations, their moods and behaviors can affect others around them – which can negatively influence their own productivity and morale.

Become aware of your feelings

e.q. emotional intelligence

As we know, emotional intelligence (or EQ for short) is one’s ability to recognize, understand, and control their own emotions as well as those of others.

By being able to identify our feelings and learn how to manage them, we can achieve great things in life. For example, someone with high levels of empathy will likely make a good friend or family member because they are understanding and willing to help you through difficult times.

On the other hand, someone who lacks empathy may hurt people around them unintentionally, but still succeed at work or in other areas of their lives. They could be very successful if they learned how to suppress their natural tendencies when needed.

There are many ways to improve your level of EQ. You do not need to spend hours every day doing something meaningful, giving back to society, practicing mindfulness, or studying psychology. Some of the easiest ways to increase your EQ include:

Practicing gratitude. This can be done daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly. Just start small and keep adding onto it until you reach the goal.

Develop your self-awareness

e.q. emotional intelligence

A large part of emotional intelligence is understanding yourself, how you feel, and what things make you feel good about yourself and bad.

This includes everything from acknowledging an achievement to realizing something you done was wrong. You should be able to recognize both positive and negative emotions and why you’re feeling them!

It can help to understand some basic psychology concepts like the theory of motivation or learned behaviors. These theories explain how people get motivated to do certain things and how habits are formed.

Drinking milk every day is a habit that most people have, for example. It takes repeated exposure to it to create this routine.

So applying these concepts to emotion can help you identify the cause of your feelings. For instance, if you were trying to motivate someone to do their job, they would probably want to know who they work for and what money they pay them.

Knowing how to reduce stress is also important as stressed out individuals may not perform well at work. And while there is no clear definition of what makes sense for you, learning how to manage your stress and sleep better can help you in that area.

Running back on points can sometimes look like avoiding challenges and failure. But investing time into things that matter to you and that bring you happiness is actually the opposite.

Developing confidence in yourself goes beyond having fun alone, it includes being willing to try new things that could lead to success.

Understand your emotions

e.q. emotional intelligence

A large part of being successful in life is knowing what you’re feeling and how to effectively use your emotional skills.

This includes understanding yourself, other people, and situations so that you can manage your own behaviors and those of others. It also means recognizing your own feelings and having strategies for managing them!

Many professionals now agree that emotional intelligence (or EQ) is an important quality for leaders to have. The term was coined in the 1990s, but it has become increasingly popular over time.

Research shows that higher levels of emotional intelligence are related to several positive outcomes, including greater job success, lower employee turnover, healthier relationships, and better overall mental health.

It also correlates with more satisfying personal relationships and experiences. While there’s no clear definition of EQ, some studies report that average individuals have about 100 points while top performers have around 120. You can increase yours through training and practice.

Emotional quotient – or EQ as it is sometimes called- is not the same thing as self-esteem, which is also important. But because it impacts social interactions and leadership, it is worth developing.

Learn to be assertive

e.q. emotional intelligence

Being able to control your emotions is an important quality for anyone to have.

We are constantly exposed to various forms of stress, both internal and external. These stresses can range from difficult situations at work or home to less serious issues like loss of money or death of a loved one.

Most people are trained to avoid putting too much energy into certain feelings. For example, when you’re upset about something, you might try to distract yourself by doing other things. You could also push those thoughts aside and not think about it anymore.

This works sometimes but not always. When we deny our own uncomfortable feelings, they often stay stuck inside us. They may even get stronger because there’s no proper channel through which to release them. This can lead to mental health problems in the long run.

Everyone experiences different levels of emotional intensity during times of crisis or challenge. It’s okay to feel some emotion, but only for a limited amount of time before you do something about it.
