Now, as AI-powered tools promise to streamline, automate, and even generate creative content at fractions of the cost, a profound question hangs heavy in the air: What happens to the thousands of skilled craftspeople who built this dream factory?
Eliot Mack, a former MIT engineer who once helped design the Roomba, was struck by Hollywood’s chaotic production process when he pivoted to filmmaking in the early 2000s.
“There’s no CAD template, no centralized database. I was like, how do movies even get made?” he recalls, a hint of amused bewilderment in his voice.

Diego Mariscal, a 43-year-old veteran dolly grip whose credits include blockbusters like “The Mandalorian” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” saw the writing on the wall during a recent shoot.
