Over the past few years, emotional intelligence (or EQ for short) has become one of the most popular psychology theories. It’s not surprising why – people feel empowered by it.
This theory says that we are all born with a certain amount of emotional intelligence to help us navigate our lives.
As we grow up, however, external factors such as the environment we grow up in can influence how much empathy and other qualities like sympathy you have. For example, if your parents never show any signs of love, then it can affect your sense of what emotions look like and how to relate to them.
So, while some people may be more emotionally intelligent than others, every person is capable of improving their own EQ.
There are many different ways to improve your emotional intelligence, but no matter which method you choose, just remember that it will make you happier.
Sometimes we get so focused on trying to make things happen that we forget about being present in the moment and experiencing what is happening at this exact time.
Emotions are a part of life, and they can be both positive and negative. They arise from experiences or situations that you create for yourself by thinking and acting negatively towards someone, self-judgment, fear, worry, etc.
With that said, there are times when emotions take over and it becomes difficult to contain them. This is totally normal!
We all have days where we feel overwhelmed, stressed, or even depressed. That’s why practicing non-reaction (or other terms like detachment, distancing, or observing) is an important element in improving your emotional intelligence.
By letting go of the past and creating space between people, you will find it easier to regulate your own emotions as well as those around you.
This also helps you focus only on current events instead of getting distracted by whatever has been going on previously.
There is no one way to improve your emotional intelligence, but learning how to deal with everyday stressors and challenges, as well as understanding your own emotions will help you grow.

A large part of emotional intelligence is making and keeping eye contact. It’s one of those things that people either learn or they don’t, like learning how to read or something else that comes naturally to some but not to others.
When someone makes an impression on you, it can be because they made an effort to make eye contact with you. They wanted to show you who they are, which is a good thing. Or maybe they didn’t make any attempt at all, and you noticed and were influenced by that. Either way, improving your own emotional intelligence will help you understand what influence other people have over you, and why they do it sometimes.
Making direct eye contact with another person is a form of acknowledgment. It says “I see you,” and “I acknowledge you as an important entity in my life right now.” It shows respect for them and their presence in your space – whether that’s physically, emotionally, or both.

A lot of people get stuck trying to improve their emotional intelligence because they think that if they use a certain tool, then they will feel more happy or better about themselves.
That’s not what EI is at all. It’s not about feeling good about yourself or being able to relate to other people’s emotions. That would be normal human empathy.
EI is about understanding your own feelings and how you influence others’ emotions. It’s also related to leadership skills since leaders play an important role in shaping the emotions of those under them.
So, while it may sound cool to know how to make someone else feel bad for five minutes, that doesn’t really help you.
You have a life to lead, things to do, and dreams to achieve. Why should you care whether someone else feels bad for two seconds?
Furthermore, most people don’t even know who their colleagues, friends, and family members are until something has gone wrong. By that time, it’s too late.
Don’t add another item to your to-do list by learning how to deal with negative moods. Also, remember that a small hurt can grow into a big one, so please be careful around people.

Developing your emotional intelligence (EI) is about understanding how you feel, learning to recognize your emotions, and then using that information to make decisions or take action.
Many people think that being intelligent means having an advanced degree or practicing psychology, but actually being smart includes things like self-awareness, motivation, empathy, and relationships.
With respect to relationships, there are several theories about what makes someone consider themselves “intelligent”. According to one theory, it’s thinking of yourself as more intelligent than others because you know more about certain topics.
However, this assumption is very subjective and depends on who you believe you are smarter than. Also, it can be tricky when you feel like everyone around you thinks they are much more intelligent than you – why should you agree?
Another theory says it’s thinking you are clever in ways that contribute to making money, taking advantage of other people, or achieving your goals.
While these are all good qualities, they may not always go along with being honest, loyal, trustworthy individuals. In fact, within EI research, we find that being able to identify and understand your own feelings and needs is considered more important than knowing about other people’s.
That said, if you want to improve your overall EI, trying to learn something new related to emotion regulation, motivation, or relationship skills can help.

As mentioned earlier, one of the biggest reasons why people get hurt or upset more easily is because they say things they don’t mean.
If you want to improve your emotional intelligence, be sure to check out your own emotions.
Don’t try to suppress them, but rather recognize what you are feeling and understand it so that you can take appropriate action.
This is especially important when it comes to relationships as well as work.
By being aware of your feelings, you will know how to respond to situations effectively and efficiently.
You will also be able to tell if someone else is happy, sad, angry or frustrated around you.

When someone is talking, they are sharing their thoughts, experiences, and feelings with you. They may talk about things that make them feel bad or good about themselves, things that make them happy or sad, and how they struggle with certain tasks. All of these topics are important to understand if you want to improve your emotional intelligence.
By listening carefully, you can learn some key tips and tricks for improving your empathy. You will also have to know what makes other people feel better or worse so you can apply this knowledge in the future.
When possible, try to do it without interrupting or taking over the conversation. This is difficult because most conversations contain both positive and negative elements, but you can still play an integral part by letting the person speak while you listen intently to get the full picture.
If there’s something that particular person said or done that made them unhappy, see if you can determine why it hurt them and then never repeat it. If you cannot avoid repeating something, at least add some more background information or try to correct any mistaken assumptions that person might have.

Most people have a hard time believing that someone could be considered emotionally intelligent because they think emotional intelligence is necessarily about you. That is not true, however.
Emotional intelligence is actually about other people, and how well you understand their emotions so you can help them feel better.
It is also about understanding your own feelings and why you are feeling the way you do.
This makes it possible to reduce your own anxiety or stress level, which helps you enjoy life more.
You will find that most people are very focused on getting what they want and avoiding things that make them unhappy, but they forget that these same actions affect others around them as well.
They may unknowingly put up barriers that prevent people from being close to them, or avoid spending time with them because of this.
Become aware of when these behaviors are happening and if they seem like they are coming more frequently than before, then try to determine the reason for this.

We are all different, which means we will have different levels of emotional intelligence (EI). Some people may be more socially intelligent or rational than others. There is no right way to think about emotions, so it makes sense that everyone does not feel and process them in the same way.
That is okay! You do you and that’s fine! But if you want to improve your EI, then you should acknowledge your strengths and areas for improvement and work on those.
It can be hard to recognize your own limitations though. When you believe you are never good enough, that becomes self-destructive.
So how can you know if you are emotionally smart? Here are some things to consider.
Are you aware of your feelings? Are they and yourself going up and down quickly without notice? If you find yourself reacting immediately to something, try taking time to take a break before responding. This gives you time to calm down and assess whether this reaction was appropriate.
Does he/she make an effort to show empathy towards you? Does she ask how you were when talking about something important to you? If so, she cares about you, and that makes you feel better.
