A growing body of research confirms that being able to manage your time is an essential skill for anyone wishing to achieve their goals.

Time management isn’t just about doing things in order of importance, it’s also about knowing which tasks are worth putting off until later.

And we’ve discussed before here how important it is to use effective time management strategies that work for you.

So, what do experts say are the best ways to measure time management skills?

Here are 6 easy questions to assess your time management skills.

Getting honest with yourself

A lot of people have advice about time management, but very few actually do it.

If you’re reading this article then chances are you already know how to measure your own time management skills. You may even be able to tell whether you’ve got them or not by looking at the things you should be doing to manage your time and the changes you need to make.

But what if I told you that there is no way to truly evaluate your time management skills? What if we took away all of the tools that most people use to assess their time management and instead gave you something much better?

We don’t have any direct evidence that anyone has perfect time management skills, nor do we have proof that someone who claims they do really do, but here’s what we can say – none of us knows how well we manage our time until we try to manage our time more effectively.

Making progress

A lot of people talk about time management, but few actually do it well. If you admire the work of others, then pick some practices that you think would help you and try to implement them.

You can read more about how to be a better time manager in our article here. However, the main points include having deadlines, tracking your time, and giving yourself permission to make mistakes.

While all of these are important, one thing most time managers forget is to make progress every day.

Making progress means not only doing things you have planned for today, but also adding things into your schedule that you will get done at some later date. This could be anything from going after a job you had been putting off to taking an advanced business class you have been thinking about for months.

The key is to choose activities that you want to add to your life and budget, and find ways to pay for them. It may take practice, but eventually you’ll reach a stage where you feel like you’ve made progress because there was something new in your week.

Breaking down big projects into little tasks

A large part of time management is breaking down your project into smaller chunks that can be completed in shorter periods of time, or even weekly! This way you do not have to spend hours upon hours completing all of the steps, only to find yourself with no progress because you ran out of time.

By breaking up work into small parts, you also will give yourself more opportunities to put off doing an assigned task, as there are fewer days between it being done and finished. It may seem impossible at first, but if you keep this mentality then eventually you will get through the whole thing!

You should try this out for one week by making every morning like an appointment. Get ready for school/work early so you don’t waste any time getting things prepared, and then once you are away from home you make sure you do not stop anywhere else unless necessary.

Taking breaks

A good time manager takes regular breaks. This can be for anything, from walking down the street to having a short conversation with someone you just bumped into.

It also includes taking breaks between tasks. For example, after finishing one task, you could go and do something else before moving onto the next thing.

Time management doesn’t mean being in control of every minute of every hour of every day, it means recognizing that you will not be able to deal with everything immediately and deciding how much you need to leave uncared-for business until later.

You will have to make choices about which things are more important than others and learn when it is okay to say “screw it, I don’t feel like doing this today”.

I think we lose track ourselves sometimes by trying to do too many things at once. We become distracted or overextended because we never really focus on any one project for very long.

That’s why it’s so important to take breaks; you should always have an empty space in your schedule where you can relax and reevaluate what you’ve been working on. Make sure to use your break time effectively!

There’s no universal way to measure whether someone has strong time management skills, but you can look for examples of how they handle their own personal workload and determine if those behaviors apply to you.

Creating a plan

One of the most important things to know about time management is how to create a plan. This article will talk more in depth about this.

A basic rule of time management is that you should never spend any time on something without first having a good reason for doing so. By this, we mean you cannot start working on one project or task until there are empty pockets in your schedule.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to make every minute count, but you must be careful not to waste time on unimportant tasks.

By using your time effectively, you can achieve greater success than if you were someone who wasted their time.

You need to understand what your priorities are and stick to them, even if it means looking at your job with new eyes. It may feel like an inconvenience at times, but understanding where your time goes will help you reevaluate how you allocate it.

If you find yourself with extra time after completing a task, then consider whether or not that was the right thing to do. Was it worth the time spent on it? If you don’t think so, then try to eliminate as much idle time as possible by changing how you organize your workload.

How to measure time management skills

There are several ways to evaluate time management skills. Some people may view being able to identify and avoid wasting time as a sign of weaker leadership qualities, while others might believe strong leaders always keep themselves organized.

Getting rid of distractions

A few simple changes you make to manage your time can have a major impact on how well you organize your time. The number one cause of lost time is being distracted by something or someone.

You spend too much time in front of the TV, computer, phone, or chat app waiting for something to do. Or you wait for someone else to start doing something before you do.

Instead, learn how to say no to things that are not important and focus on what matters most.

This will take practice but hopefully you’ll get better at it as you grow and learn about managing your time.
