Having more time is one of the greatest things you can do for your career, and effective time management is a skill that every professional must learn. With how busy our lives have become with work commitments, family responsibilities and other hobbies, it has become increasingly difficult to find time to focus solely on advancing your career.
If you are in a position where you feel like you’re spending all day every day working, there is an important thing you should be aware of. You are probably wasting your most valuable asset — time.
Time is what makes us wealthy. We get paid well because we spent those years developing ourselves, learning new skills and investing in relationships which helped us grow as people. It’s also what keeps us feeling good about ourselves – we spend these years focusing on activities that make us happy, and thus we develop self-esteem.
But too much time being invested in unproductive activity means less money in the bank, lower morale at home and work, and possibly even health issues due to stress. All this could potentially cost you your job, or at least contribute to your lack of employment.
It's totally normal to feel overwhelmed by the amount of work you have, but denying yourself this reward will only make your situation worse. So here are some easy ways to organize your life so that you realize your dreams of financial success, personal fulfillment and/or party invitations.
Commit to a plan
A lot of people start trying time management strategies after spending hours watching TV or surfing the internet. While that can be fun, it can also make your sleep more difficult as you stay up late to check out the latest trends in organizing your life.
If you’re one of those people who starts looking into how to do effective time management when you feel like you’ve run out of things to do, try doing something simple first.
For example, starting with breaking down your tasks according to order of importance and urgency is an easy way to begin. It’s also a good place to start if you’re not sure whether you should devote some of your time to work or hobbies since both are important to living your dreams.
Breaking down your tasks by area gives you another level of organization so that you don’t have to worry about what task comes next or if there’s anything left for today. Having a system makes it easier to move onto the next thing once you've completed what you're working on at the moment.
Develop good discipline
A lot of people think that if they do not have time to complete their tasks, then you should stop trying to be organized.
This is like saying if you cannot spend enough money, then you should give up spending money!
By this theory, if you make too many sacrifices, you will eventually reach an empty space where there are no more things you can give up. This does not work in real life.
We are constantly surrounded by resources, so it is impossible to run out of things to do. If we did, something very important would be missing- self-confidence.
Self-confidence comes from knowing what decisions you made were right, which encourages you to keep making the same choices.
Running out of options removes the challenge of choosing whether or not to put effort into a task, which decreases your confidence.
When you have limited time, you need to pick projects that require little energy to manage. Projects with longer deadlines may feel tempting, but you must stick to your rules.
Work on your patience
A lot of people think that being more productive means doing as many things as you can in as little time as possible, which is totally wrong!
That’s not how productivity works. Productivity is about focusing on the most important tasks and spending the right amount of time on them, not rushing through them to make more progress. It’s also about having enough time for each task, so you don’t end up working longer hours than necessary without any downtime.
With those two points covered, let me tell you something about one of the biggest enemies of effective time management – impatience.
I won’t say it’s impossible to be patient, but it does take effort. Taking too much of a hold over you, it can hinder your ability to focus and put off what you need to do until later. So if you find yourself getting impatient with the pace at which you're moving, try to relax and allocate adequate time for every project.
Make it a priority
One of the biggest reasons why people get distracted, lose track of time and never seem to have enough time is because they don’t make time management a top priority.
If you want to do something, you must first figure out how much time you have to devote to it and then you must be willing to allocate that time to it. It can’t wait until there are no more hours in the day anymore!
And we all know what happens when things come up during the day – everything seems to pileup and create a lot of distractions.

A few years ago, we would have advised you to never take a break! Having a short break can actually hinder your productivity and efficiency.
The classic time management theory says that by giving yourself breaks, you will spend more time working because you’ll need to refresh before diving into another project. This isn’t necessarily true though.
It depends how well you manage your energy and what tasks require your attention at the time. If you don’t control this, then taking a break could be a bad thing.
You may need a break if a major task requires a lot of focus or energy. You may also need a break if you are too distracted to work effectively.
If you do find it difficult to concentrate for a while after leaving the house, try doing something unrelated like reading an article online, listening to music or talking to a friend.
Held down as a rule, shorter breaks can become counterproductive in fact. What happens is that you keep thinking about all the things you should be getting done, and so you stay busy but not very productive.
This can cause stress, which only adds to the problem. It’s better to acknowledge that you’ve got limited time and resources and ask yourself whether you are spending yours optimally – particularly your own time.
Stop working on your stressors
A lot of people think that by trying to reduce the amount of time you spend stressed out, or spending more time doing other things like exercising or watching TV, then you will stop feeling stressed. But there is actually another way to do it!
What works better is stopping what you are currently doing in order to focus on something else. For example, if you’re constantly rushing around to make all of your deadlines, then starting tomorrow morning when you get up, you could simply tell yourself “I won’t be going to work until I have completed my assignments for today.”
Then you can go back to sleep, wake up and repeat this process every day for an entire week. Over those seven days, you will probably find that you have enough time left over to start preparing for next month’s assignments, as well as some extra time each day.
Learn to prioritize
A lot of people try to do too many things at once, which only ends up making them feel overwhelmed and stressed-out. It’s important to learn how to prioritize so that you don’t keep putting off what needs to be done because you think there is no time!
It takes practice, but eventually you will get into a rhythm where everything gets done. You will find yourself feeling relaxed and confident in your ability to handle all tasks given enough time.
