When we are not aware of our emotions, they can control us and hurt others around us. It is important to be able to recognize your own feelings and also identify what effect those feelings have on other people. This article will talk about some ways that emotional intelligence impacts communication.
Emotional intelligence (or EI for short) is described as someone’s ability to understand their own emotions and those of others. There are many theories about how emotional intelligence works, but most agree that it is influenced by two main factors: intrapersonal and interpersonal skills.
With respect to intrapersonal skills, individuals with higher levels of emotional intelligence perceive and deal with their emotions more effectively. They know how to relate to themselves emotionally and in turn, this helps them relate to others.
When it comes to interpersonal skills, people who have high emotional quotients (EQs) feel empathy and compassion for other people. They may even be able to predict how others feel before they realize it. Both of these qualities play an integral part in effective communication.
In this article, we will discuss why having higher EQs is important, and some ways that emotional competence affects conversation. Let’s get started!
Why is being smart about emotion important?
We live in a culture where conversations tend to focus on ideas and things rather than emotions.

Recent studies suggest that having high levels of emotional intelligence is linked to higher employee engagement, lower turnover, and greater productivity. These findings are particularly significant in the workplace today, where employees’ interactions with colleagues and superiors can be both positive and negative – and sometimes even hostile or violent.
As we’ve seen so far, one of the skillsets you get when you develop your emotional intelligence is how to recognize and manage your own emotions.
But it goes much further than that! People who have high levels of emotional intelligence also understand others‘ feelings and behaviors, and relate well to them. They’re able to motivate other people through empathy and understanding.
In fact, some experts believe that being emotionally intelligent is what makes someone qualified to do their jobs effectively.
That’s why many employers now offer training in emotional intelligence. Some programs are completely free, while others require a small fee depending on the organization.

One of the most important things you can do as a person is recognize your own emotions.
This is difficult because we are constantly exposed to a variety of stimuli, both internal and external.
We feel emotions about lots of different things including relationships, work, money, etc. – making it hard to identify what is causing our feelings at any given time.
But being able to recognize your own emotions is an essential tool in improving your communication skills.
Because when you understand why someone else is feeling a certain way, you’re more likely to try and fix the issue or cause them to change their behavior to help you both achieve your goals.
You also have to acknowledge that they may be feeling these emotions for a reason, so trying to figure out what caused them can sometimes help you determine how to better address the problem moving forward.

Develop your emotional intelligence by practicing acceptance and understanding of other people’s emotions.
This means acknowledging that some things will make someone else angry, for example, if you do not agree with what they are saying then it is probably because you disagree with them so there is no need to get upset about it.
It also means recognizing their feelings as valid – even if you believe something different than they do.
By being aware of how others feel, you can sometimes avoid conflict by changing what you say or doing something differently.
You can also be honest and direct instead of using put-on words and phrases. This will help keep relationships strong and trust high.

A second element of emotional intelligence is called self-awareness. This applies to both individuals and groups of people. Your level of self-awareness determines how you perceive other people and their actions.
If you have low levels of self-awareness, then you believe others are doing or saying things because they wanted you to think that way about them. You may also assume they like you more than they do since they shared such information with you.
On the contrary, if you have high self-awareness then you understand the reasons why someone does what they do. You recognize when something isn’t true for them and whether it’s because they don’t like you, or they can’t connect with you, or they want something from you.
Both qualities are important in communication. Without self- awareness, you won’t know which types of messages work and which ones fail. You will also miss out on lots of opportunities to communicate and discuss issues.
Self-aware individuals are aware not only of themselves, but of others as well. They are able to evaluate how others make them feel and try to find the root cause of this.

A key part of emotional intelligence is understanding your own emotions. You can learn how to do this by practicing self-reflection and identifying what types of feelings you have.
It’s easy to think that other people cause our own emotions, but it’s more likely that things like tone of voice, body language, and conversation content influence us.
By knowing who or what made you feel a certain way, you can begin to understand why you felt that way. You can also use that knowledge to avoid creating similar negative experiences for yourself or others.

A second important aspect of emotional intelligence is control. You can’t effectively communicate with someone if you are too emotionally invested in one topic or side.
If you get into an argument with someone, you will not be able to listen to their points because you will be preoccupied with proving how wrong they are. And you will probably say some things you do not mean!
Likewise, if you are trying to make someone feel good by telling them about how great they are, then you will fail to ask them questions and really learn about them.

As discussed earlier in this article, being able to read someone’s emotions is one of the most important skills you can develop because it allows you to understand what they are feeling. Being able to recognize other people’s emotional states helps promote trust between individuals, which is a key ingredient to effective communication.
When you cannot tell if something makes someone feel happy or sad, then you do not know whether to believe their statements or not. For example, if someone says that they love you, they could be telling you that for self-serving purposes so that they can get help paying bills. Or, they may just want to leave you because they think you have lost interest in them. It does not matter which one it is, but you should be able to identify them so that you can determine which one it is.
If you cannot tell how someone is feeling, you will never truly know who they are as a person. You will always wonder why they acted like that, and there might be times when they did not act like themselves. This would also negatively affect your relationship with them.

As mentioned earlier, emotional intelligence is just that- understanding how to manage your emotions. When you do not understand your own feelings, it can be difficult to recognize what others are going through.
If a coworker has been absent for an extended amount of time, it is important to know whether they will return or if they have left the company. If he or she does not respond to messages and calls, it may indicate that there is nothing more people could do to recruit them into the organization or that they have given up.
It is best to address these issues at the beginning so that people do not need to feel compelled to talk about their personal life. It also helps the person learn some key lessons in leadership by seeing how someone else led theirs down a negative path.
Never assume anything about another person’s personality unless you truly know them, even if you think you do. A lot of times, leaders get frustrated because employees seem to lack empathy.
Give each other enough space to work out your differences but still maintain a level of professionalism when doing so. This will help keep the workplace civil and productive.
