Emotional Quotient Test – Why You Should Care

The term ‘emotional quotient’ was first used in 1981 by Daniel Goleman in his book Psychology II: An Interdisciplinary Approach. He defined it as someone’s ability to identify and control their own emotion, and apply these skills to understand and influence others.

Why is emotional intelligence important?

how emotional intelligence is important

Over the past few years, there has been a growing interest in what we refer to as “emotional literacy” or “EI.” Some even use the term “Emotional Quotient (EGT)” to describe it. This focuses not only on how someone perceives and regulates their emotions, but also whether they are able to recognize and understand them for what they are — just thoughts – and be aware of the effects that emotion have on others.

Many believe that having high levels of EI can have significant benefits for you. You will feel happier more often, which could potentially improve your mood. You may also make better decisions due to the fact that you take into account both positive and negative information about a situation before coming to a conclusion.

Furthermore, researchers continue to explore the link between higher EI and improved health and well-being. People with higher EI tend to do better physically, perhaps because they manage their stress and anxiety better. They may also seek out healthier lifestyles and spend time with people who are supportive and encouraging.

This article will discuss some ways you can develop your emotional quotient. However, first let us look at why this is an important factor.

Ways to improve your emotional intelligence

how emotional intelligence is important

A lot of people believe that being emotionally intelligent means you are smart about emotions, which is not correct. That would be like saying running makes you smart because you learn how to run.

Being emotionally intelligent means being able to understand your own feelings and those of others. It also means being able to use your feelings to motivate yourself into action.

It’s definitely possible to develop your emotional intelligence, but it takes work and practice. You can spend time educating yourself about emotion theory and strategies, or you could just go through your daily experiences as a learner.

Recognize your emotions

how emotional intelligence is important

A large part of emotional intelligence is being able to recognize your own emotions. You can learn how to do this by practicing, doing so regularly, and comparing your reactions with those of others.

Many people seem to have trouble recognizing their own feelings. This makes sense because we often times tell ourselves that something feels bad even though we feel it does not.

For example, let’s say you heard about someone getting hurt very badly. Your first instinct might be to feel sad for them, but then you realize you are already thinking about what you will make next week‘s lunch plan.

The more you can identify your emotions, the better. Also, the easier it will be to regulate your emotions when you want to.

You should be conscious of your emotions at all times, but especially during difficult times. Doing this will help you focus instead of get distracted by your thoughts and feelings.

Be authentic

Being emotionally intelligent means being yourself. I know this seems really weird but it takes a lot of work to be able to do that. You have to learn how to recognize your emotions and then what you make of them.

Emotions are a very powerful tool for life. They can motivate us, help us succeed, and keep us healthy. But if we don’t control our own emotional reactions, they can hurt others and themselves.

That’s why emotional intelligence is so important. It helps you manage your emotions and understand the role they play in helping you achieve your goals.

You also need to use your emotions to help motivate yourself. For example, when you’re trying to lose weight, you should feel happy because you decided to go to the gym today, sad because you didn’t eat enough food, and determined because you’ll take another step towards your goal tomorrow.

Research shows that people who are more aware and understanding of their own feelings tend to enjoy their lives more than those who struggle with emotion. So even though it may not seem like it at times, having strong emotional skills is an essential part of living a successful life.

Authentic emotions come from inside you. Sometimes they’re easy to access, and sometimes they’re not.

But no matter which ones you have or aren’t using, there’s a way to improve your emotional literacy – by learning about different types of emotions and how to identify them.

Understand your own mind

how emotional intelligence is important

A large part of being able to regulate your emotions is knowing yourself. You are not only aware of your thoughts, but you also understand what makes you feel different emotions.

This understanding comes from past experiences and insights into yourself. For example, when you were younger you may have felt insecure about your body, but as you grew up you learned how to control your perception of your appearance.

As you grow older, you learn how to deal with other people’s actions, and whether they make you feel good or bad. If someone does something that hurts you, you will probably find it harder to keep smiling after they leave!

There are many ways to develop emotional intelligence (EI). Some suggest practicing mindfulness, which focuses on present time interactions and learning how to relate to others. Learning how to manage your stress and sleep well is another way to increase your EI.

Teach and be consistent

how emotional intelligence is important

Recent research has linked emotional intelligence to many different career success markers, such as higher salary, promotion, greater job satisfaction, and even lower employee turnover.

Other studies have pointed to relationships being improved due to its effect on marital quality. It is also thought to play a role in social interactions, teamwork, and leadership effectiveness.

So what are we talking about when we refer to emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence (or EI for short) refers to your ability to recognize, understand, manage, and use emotions to achieve personal goals. These emotions can be yours or someone else’s.

It sounds simple enough, but there are several tests to determine if you have high levels of EI. Some examples include using and recognizing emotion in yourself and others, identifying which emotions are helpful and which are not, and regulating these feelings.

If you want to increase your level of EI, then you must first learn how to identify them. Once you know what they look like, you can compare your own with some references. This will help you see whether you are more skilled at controlling certain types of emotions or other’s specific ones.

Make eye contact

how emotional intelligence is important

When talking to someone, making direct eye contact is one of the first things that they will notice about you. It is also a way to gain their attention and show interest in them!

Making direct eye contact with people can be tricky at times because we often time do not know what kind of response we are looking for. For example, if someone looks away or lower than your face, it may make you feel discouraged or even hurt.

That is why it is important to determine how to maintain adequate eye contact. By practicing this, you will learn how to use eye contact effectively.

You should always try to look directly into someone’s eyes when you talk to them. This creates an intimate connection and helps tell who the person really is under all their layers.

However, do not stare too long or fix your gaze on theirs unless you want to see some body language showing that you have hit a wall. If you get nervous, take a break and re-evaluate whether or not this individual is worth investing your energy in.

Overall, being aware of other people’s emotional states and reading nonverbal cues is a key part in understanding relationships.

Be realistic

how emotional intelligence is important

Many people get emotional intelligence confused with empathy, which is also important to have in your life. While having an understanding of how others feel and being able to recognize what emotions other people are experiencing can be helpful, it’s not the same thing as empathy.

Empathy comes more naturally to some people than others. If you don’t understand why someone else might be feeling a certain way, then you’re not going to try to put yourself into their shoes and therefore won’t be able to empathize with them.

However, if you are able to do that, then you will probably enjoy interacting with this person more because you’ll understand their feelings better.

Emotional intelligence isn’t about being able to identify everyone’s every emotion, but rather using your knowledge of psychology and human behavior to perceive the emotions of others.

This includes being aware of your own emotions so you can relate to those of others. It also means knowing what caused these emotions and whether there is anything you can do to reduce them or avoid making the situation worse for her/him.
