While both emotional intelligence and IQ test you on your knowledge of emotions, they differ in what kind of emotion you should have and how to use them.
Emotional intelligence focuses on understanding your own feelings and those of others. You are asked questions that require you to evaluate whether something is positive or negative, and if there are patterns to determine why someone may feel a certain way.
This form of EQ comes down to learning about yourself and other people. It’s having an internal dialogue as well – thinking about all the reasons why you might be feeling one thing versus another.
It also includes knowing when it’s time to take action and how to manage your actions and reactions.
Meditation helps you achieve this by training your mind to focus and still for extended periods of time. A beginner can start with five minutes every morning and work up from there!
IQ tests ask you questions that measure your knowledge and things like math ability. They don’t tell you anything about yourself or who you are, which is what makes them less useful than EI tools.
Practice mindfulness (see above) and do not worry about scoring higher on the test, just learn from your experiences. Your score will show whether you have skills beyond simply answering question correctly, but what else you know about yourself and life.
