Over the past few years, emotional intelligence (“EI”) has become one of the most popular leadership theories in the workplace. It looks at how well you control your own emotions as an important factor in achieving success and improving the performance of those around you.

Some say that we are now living in a culture where everyone is expected to have high levels of EI, not just individuals but also groups and organizations.

In fact, several companies even offer training courses in EI for their employees. In these settings, managers would learn how to better motivate, inspire, and challenge their staff members by understanding their personal strengths and weaknesses when it comes to emotion.

Becoming more aware of your own feelings and those of others can only help you in both your professional and private life. This is why many believe that developing your EQ is something you need to work on throughout your lifetime.

But what does “emotional intelligence” actually mean? And who really has it, and what do they use it for?

In this article, we will discuss some of the basics of this highly-vogue theory and explore whether or not it is worth investing in for your career and/or self. We will also look at some myths about this topic so that you are clear on what things are supposed to be like and what ones are lieing claims.

Look at how it affects your life

Developing your emotional intelligence (EI) is a skill that you can learn, and once learned, it can have profound effects on your life.

Many believe that EI comes naturally to some people, while others struggle with their EQ. It’s true that there are differences in average people in terms of emotional understanding and use of emotions, but this doesn’t mean that everyone is the same.

Some people may be more emotionally intelligent than you, which can make you feel bad. You might even think that they’re better-looking or smarter than you!

However, I would like to suggest that being more emotionally intelligent isn’t necessarily an advantage over someone who is less empathetic. In fact, studies show that those with higher levels of empathy tend to experience greater happiness and success.

Why? Because when other people look forward to things, they will help them enjoy these experiences as well. And having friends and family who share your passion for something makes it easier to pursue and achieve your goals.

Learn to be honest with your emotions

A large part of emotional intelligence is being able to recognize your own feelings and identify what makes you feel bad or good about yourself, your relationships, and the people around you.

By this, I don’t mean telling yourself that you’re a worthless person because you made a mistake. That won’t do anything but make you feel even more miserable at yourself.

I’m talking about things like when your best friend tells you she doesn’t think much of you anymore and you realize that something happened years ago when you both wanted the same thing. You can choose to get angry or depressed about it, but that’s just adding to your mental clutter.

It would be better to acknowledge those thoughts as “something they said,” learn from them, and move on.

Practice self-awareness

A key part of emotional intelligence is being aware of your emotions. This includes knowing what you are feeling, understanding why you are feeling a certain way, and identifying appropriate ways to feel about things.

Some experts suggest that we should try not to get too focused on our feelings but rather focus on something else. However, there is a difference between focusing on something other than yourself or having more important things in your life.

Focusing on yourself can be difficult at times because we all have days when we may feel down, stressed, or overwhelmed. At those times it can be hard to understand how you could ask others to do things for you or help you out.

Having more important things in your life means going beyond just thinking about yourself and investing time into creating relationships that matter to you. These people will show they care by doing things for you, helping you out, and encouraging you.

Practicing mindfulness also helps us become more aware of our emotions. This involves paying close attention to what you are doing, what environment you are in, and what things make you feel happy or sad.

Be realistic

A lot of quick fixes for emotional intelligence are not worth your time or money. They may work at first, but eventually you will be spending more money on professional services to help you deal with your emotions!

There is no one way to become emotionally intelligent. What works for you depends on who you are as a person and what situations make you feel stressed or overwhelmed.

Some people learn this skill in college or through past relationships where it was trained to them. Others have certain personality traits that make it easier to develop their EQs.

This doesn’t mean there isn’t anything you can do to improve your emotional intelligence. There are many things you can try, from practicing mindfulness to developing friendships that boost your self-confidence.

But looking outside of the box to hone your skills is important so you don’t spend money on theories that don’t work.

Understand your emotions

A major part of emotional intelligence is understanding yourself and your feelings. You can learn how to do this through practicing mindfulness, which is simply paying close attention to what you are doing at the moment – without thinking about anything else.

By learning how to recognize and understand your own emotions, you will be able to control them and avoid acting on impulses that could potentially hurt you or others.

You will also realize that some people may not like something you say but it doesn’t make them right so you should just move on. With all these lessons under one umbrella, they are all concepts known as ‘self-awareness’.

Self-awareness is important because it helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses, know when someone is trying to manipulate you, and makes it easier to relate to other people.

It also gives you an insight into your personal habits and why you behave in certain ways. All of these things help you to improve who you are as a person and achieve your goals.

Practice gratitude
Try writing down three things each day that you are grateful for. This can be whatever aspect of your life or career you are working on at the time.

This becomes an easy way to see if anyone around you is supportive or not! If they are then great, keep sharing these messages with them, but if they aren’t try looking outside of your circle for inspiration and new relationships.

Learn to be assertive

Being able to control your emotions is an important part of being emotionally intelligent. When you learn how to be more aware of your feelings, and are able to identify what causes those feelings, it helps you manage them.

Many people struggle with emotional regulation because they make too many assumptions or take things for granted that set off negative emotions. This is why there’s a lot of tension in relationships — sometimes one person feels like they’re walking on eggshells and can’t do anything without provoking a reaction.

Become aware of your assumptions so if someone does something that makes you feel irritated, ask yourself why you assumed they did that. Was it because of past experiences? Were their actions out of line or was this situation not normal?

By acknowledging the source of your emotion, you can work to avoid responding negatively and allowing yourself to focus on other things. Becoming more aware of your emotions will help you regulate yours.

Another way to become more self-aware is by recognizing and naming your emotions. For example, when you’re feeling angry, recognize that you’re feeling angry. Then, name the effect that anger could have — maybe it’s hurtful towards others, or it may cause you to say or do things you wouldn’t otherwise.

By becoming more aware of your emotions, you’ll eventually reach a place where you can better control them.

Learn to be a listener

Being able to listen is one of the most important skills you can develop because it makes up half of every conversation you have.

Talking about things with other people requires you to pay attention to what they say, how they say it, when they say it, and whether they seem interested in what you are saying.

You also need to give them time to talk — not only for their own reasons, but also because they may not feel like talking at that moment, or maybe they’ll run out of things to say.

Their mood may change during the conversation, and this too can make keeping the conversation going difficult.

If you find yourself struggling to concentrate on these points, try taking some “silent minutes” before continuing the chat. Or ask if there’s someone you could meet them for later so you don’t have to immediately end the call.

Whatever you do, don’t force them to speak while they want to stay silent – even for a few seconds will make them feel uncomfortable, and might scare them off completely.

Learn to be a divergent thinker

A diverge thinking person exercises their brain in ways that do not usually have one goal or outcome. They can look at something and come up with different ideas about it, and you would know best what they are trying to say without having to ask them directly.

This is called being a parallel thinker. People who think more like this are typically very successful because they recognize the value of other people’s thoughts and opinions.

They also may find it easy to share their ideas because they feel that someone else already understands most of what they want to talk about. In both cases, they will enjoy talking to you more than to anyone else because you seem to “get them.”

Some examples of diversive thinking include considering the pros and cons of doing things, looking at things from several angles, and acknowledging differences in opinion even when you disagree with them.

It is important to remember that no matter how intelligent you are, it does not make you any better than anybody else. Your intelligence is only useful if you learn to apply it to help others achieve their goals.

Become aware of your emotional strengths and weaknesses and use them to motivate yourself and others. This will ensure that you do not let external forces prevent you from living an emotionally healthy life.

You are here to live your own life so try to ignore negative feelings as much as possible.
