Over the past few years, emotional intelligence (“EI”) has become one of the most popular workplace qualities in America. It is also one of the most difficult to measure, making it even more appealing. Employers that seem to have “emotionally intelligent” employees are indeed looking into whether or not EI is a trait they possess.

But there are some who argue that this emphasis on emotion is actually detrimental to business. They say that people with high levels of emotional intelligence can be too sensitive and affecty, which costs companies money through higher employee turnover and unhappy workers. Some go as far to call it “crying-on-the-job syndrome.”

These skeptics of emotional intelligence are usually referred to as “executives.” Because they are in positions of power, they feel that their job demands require them to be emotionally detached from others – something that many experts agree is impossible.

However, recent research indicates that there may be another way to look at emotional intelligence. Rather than emphasizing how quickly individuals respond to emotions, it seems like the opposite — being able to control your own emotions takes longer. This shift in perspective comes from a theory called Cognitive Dominance Theory.

CDT suggests that we all have limited cognitive resources that help us focus and manage our feelings. People who have greater cognitive dominance use up these resources thinking about and controlling their thoughts and feelings.

Make eye contact

how to demonstrate emotional intelligence

Most people feel that if they can’t make direct eye contact with someone for longer than one minute then there is something about them that they are hiding or that they do not like others very much.

This isn’t true at all!

Making direct eye contact takes practice, but it is important because it creates trust. It shows interest in what other people have to say which makes them more likely to listen to you. Plus, it helps us understand each other more clearly since we use our eyes to express ourselves.

So, how long should you be able to hold eye contact before deciding whether to break it? There is no hard and fast rule for this, but most experts agree that you should be able to keep eye contact for eight seconds before needing to break it.

Eight seconds seems like a lot, but when you try it, I promise you will easily find that you can do it twice in a row! (Actually, some people even say that three seconds is enough to show strong eye contact.)

Practice making eye contact with friends, family, colleagues and strangers for as little as ten minutes a day to see how many times you can go beyond the classic three seconds.

Be honest with your peers

how to demonstrate emotional intelligence

As mentioned earlier, one of the major components of emotional intelligence is being able to recognize and understand emotions that others may be feeling.

By this token, it’s very important for students to learn how to effectively communicate about things such as sadness or disappointment that another person may have experienced.

It can sometimes feel awkward for people who are not used to communicating about feelings, but by practicing, it becomes second nature.

If you’re in a situation where someone else seems down after something happened, ask them if they would like to talk about it. If they say yes, then start off by saying what they seemed sad or disappointed about before and see if there’s anything new you pick up about them.

This way, you’ll know whether they’re more open about their feelings now or if they’ve got better ways of doing so.

Listen to others closely

how to demonstrate emotional intelligence

Develop your listening skills by practicing it every day, but make sure you are listening for something more than just information- You want to learn how to listen well.

You want to understand what other people is saying and trying to get across. If you can do that, then you have mastered some of the key parts of emotional intelligence.

By being able to recognize and identify emotions in others, you will be better at helping them work through their problems or issues.

This is important because most people struggle with feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, or discouraged about certain things.

If someone else is having a hard time believing they should invest money into a career, there is probably not much anyone can say to change their mind.

But if you could find ways to help them feel less stressed, maybe they would see investing in education as an easier choice. Or perhaps they’d even give new ideas a chance.

There are many tools teachers use to motivate students, and understanding emotion helps teach you how to apply this in the classroom.

For example, when a student seems distracted during class, ask whether anything is going on outside of school that might be upsetting him/her.

It could be a relationship issue, financial stress, or health concerns. Sometimes students need a break due to things beyond their control.

When they realize there is no easy solution, it can weaken their motivation to focus on schoolwork.

Be honest with your supervisor

As mentioned before, emotional intelligence is also referred to as EQ or emojisquence. However, using these terms may seem vague to some because it can sometimes sound like you’re asking about someone’s emotions in a specific situation or how they use emoji stamps.

EQ actually refers to how well you control and regulate your own emotions so that you are able to understand and relate to others. This includes being able to identify your own feelings and those of other people, understanding why different individuals behave the way they do, and showing appropriate empathy for them.

Your colleagues will likely talk about their problems at work. By being aware of your strengths and weaknesses in regard to emotional intelligence, you can determine if and when it is appropriate to ask them questions about what was said or done, whether they need help figuring out their mood, etc.

If you are ever needed for an interview, test, job evaluation, etc., try putting more effort into demonstrating your strong points than weak ones.

Be realistic

how to demonstrate emotional intelligence

A lot of people get stuck in emotional intelligence theory because they believe there is now-a-tool that can be used to improve your EQ. There are some theories about how EQ comes more naturally to some people than others, but no tool exists that can tell you if you have high or low EQ before someone actually asks you to do something outside of work or home.

That’s not to say that there isn’t anything you can do to boost your own EQ, though! By practicing certain skills, you can definitely increase your empathy, situational awareness, and other qualities that most would agree contribute to greater overall happiness in life.

The thing about emotional intelligence, however, is that it’s not a one and done deal. You need to consistently practice these things every day, possibly even all year round. This makes it different from many other types of skill development like language learning, for example, where you only needed to use the material once at least.

If you want to learn how to demonstrate emotional intelligence, you will probably have to put in a little effort beyond just thinking about ways to be kind to yourself and others. That said, don’t expect instant results — it takes time to strengthen our natural tendencies, so don’t get impatient.

Hopefully this article has inspired you to look into some of the areas of emotional intelligence and what you can do to develop them within yourself.

Share your experiences

Most people are not emotionally intelligent, this includes members of your own family. This can be difficult at times as they may have never seen much emotion in you.

If someone does something that makes you feel bad or angry, do not keep it to yourself. Talk about what you felt and why.

This could be saying or doing something hurtful to you, ignoring you when he/she should have been engaged with you, being too busy with work, etc.

Discuss how these things made you feel and what you needed at the time. Try to understand their side so you can avoid such behaviors in the future.

Demonstrating emotional intelligence is a way to win over others and help them grow. You will see changes in how they behave towards you for sure!

Emotions play an integral part in human interactions. It is important to learn how to manage yours and use them effectively.

Be optimistic

how to demonstrate emotional intelligence

Even if you have bad days, remain positive about the future of your life. Keep thinking about all the things you want to do, and be motivated by how much you want to achieve these goals.

It is difficult to feel happy when there are lots of challenges in your life. Life can sometimes get tough and stressful, but staying hopeful will help you deal with situations that may not necessarily be easy.

By being optimistic, you’ll find it easier to enjoy yourself at times, and this will make other parts of your life more fun as well.

Optimism is also related to having higher levels of happiness. It has been shown that happier people are more likely to succeed in life than people who are less happy.

Success comes down to spending time with the right people, working hard, and having good luck, but beyond that, emotional intelligence plays an important part.

Emotional intelligence means understanding your own emotions and those of others. This includes knowing what makes you feel good and what makes you unhappy, and using these skills for your own benefit and theirs.

You could learn how to show greater empathy, apply appropriate stress management strategies, recognize your feelings and those of others, and use effective communication techniques.

All of these qualities contribute to optimism. If you don’t believe that things can turn out badly, then you won’t worry as much about possible setbacks.

Be humble

how to demonstrate emotional intelligence

A key part of emotional intelligence is understanding your own emotions. You can’t effectively help others if you don’t understand your own feelings.

Research shows that people who are able to identify and describe their emotions are more likely to experience positive mental health, compared to individuals who cannot do so.

By being aware of your own feelings, you will be better at predicting how other people may feel and what they could mean for you.

It also means you will be better at detecting whether someone else is feeling like they might need some help or not — something even small changes in behavior usually indicate.

On the other hand, when someone does show clear signs of distress, it’s important to be willing to address them as soon as possible.
