Recent studies show that emotional intelligence (or EQ as it is often referred to) can have profound impacts on your career, personal life, and happiness. While there was some talk of this concept years ago, it has really picked up steam in recent years.

Research shows that people who are more emotionally intelligent tend to do better at work, enjoy their colleagues more, and are happier overall. This makes sense, considering that emotions play an important role in how well we deal with other people, and being able to relate to others and create trust is key to success.

It also doesn’t hurt that you’ll probably feel happier when you’re not stressed out. On the flip side, stress can sometimes be helpful for getting things done, but most of the time it isn’t. So staying in control of your feelings and having self-awareness can help mitigate the negative effects of stress.

There are several theories about what makes someone seem more or less emotionally intelligent, so while there isn’t one definitive way to increase your EQ, looking into different concepts may inspire new ideas.

That said, no matter which theory sounds interesting to you, just practicing and developing your skills is always a good thing.

Have patience

A lot of people have emotional intelligence, but they don’t use it because they are not patient enough with things that make them feel bad about themselves or angry at someone else.

If you want to develop your emotional intelligence, you need to be able to take time to reflect on yourself and what has gone wrong and learn from it. You should also be able to wait for something to calm down before moving onto the next thing.

On a daily basis, this means staying away from arguments unless you are ready to have an argument that is. It can mean letting someone go even if you really wanted to keep in touch.

It also means giving up something you desire so that other people can enjoy it. This could be going out with friends instead of spending time alone, quitting drinking or smoking, or investing in a business trip or train ticket rather than buying a new shirt or pair of shoes that you had planned on buying.

By being more aware of how your actions affect others and being willing to accept these consequences, you will find that your emotions stay under control. You won’t let small things get the best of you and you’ll know when it’s time to move on.

Make eye contact

Making direct, meaningful connections with other people is one of the most important things you can do as a person. When someone looks you in the eyes, they are giving you their attention, and it can make you feel powerful or even loved.

When we don’t look directly into each other’s eyes, we often hide what we are thinking or how we are feeling. This can sometimes cause hurt feelings or resentment that get stored away instead of being resolved.

Making eye contact helps us understand what emotions others are experiencing and gives them a way to express those thoughts and feelings. It also shows respect for their personal space and reminds them that you care about them.

It may be difficult at first to make eye contact, but practicing will strengthen your emotional intelligence. As you grow your own emotional self-awareness, you’ll learn when it’s okay to ask others about themselves and what they’re going through, and you’ll know how to respond if they aren’t looking forward to talking.

Be realistic

A lot of theories about emotional intelligence focus too much on how you should feel or learn how to feel certain emotions, instead of what kind of person you are within. This can be very misleading if your goal is to become more emotionally intelligent.

The first thing this can mean is that you’re not allowed to feel angry anymore. That’s not an emotion anyone wants to see in someone who has emotional intelligence!

Emotions such as anger help us deal with external stimuli, things like other people or situations outside of you. They motivate you to take action so you can fix the problem, or at least try to.

So letting yourself feel that ugly anger only helps them stay that way — it doesn’t make you any less of a person.

Share your experiences

A lot of people have advice about how to develop emotional intelligence, but few actually share their stories with you. They might tell you that being able to recognize and control your emotions is important, but they don’t show you what kind of person they were before they learned this skill, and they never talk about how hard it was at first.

So, when someone tells you that you should try to put yourself in other people’s shoes or suggest practicing “I am not my feelings, I can change them,” you are left wondering if they really understood the concept.

If you want to learn more about emotional intelligence, then you must do two things: (1) understand how emotionally intelligent people functioned earlier in life, and (2) analyze how you feel about certain situations.

With regard to (1), you need to look into the lives of emotionally intelligent people so that you know what tools they used to achieve success.

You will also find out why they succeeded and learned from past mistakes. By studying these examples, you will be inspired to become more like them.

For example, Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors in America, says that his early success came down to experience. He invested time in stocks long ago, which allowed him to pick up valuable lessons along the way.

Be honest with your peers

As mentioned earlier, one of the biggest factors in developing emotional intelligence is being able to relate to people. This can be difficult at times because we are all different and have different personalities that appeal to other people.

However, if you want to develop your empathy skills it will help to be aware of this and try to understand why someone might feel the way they do.

This could be due to a situation that has happened or something that person said to them. It could even be because they felt like talking about things so you should be ready for these conversations.

Whatever the case may be, learn how to appreciate what makes each individual special and keep an open mind.

Another good idea is to watch some YouTube videos related to interpersonal relations to see how others manage their relationships.

Listen to others closely

One of the most important things you can do as a person is listen to other people. When someone else talks, they are telling you something about them and what they care about.

By listening carefully and understanding what they are saying, you will learn a lot about them!

People often have secrets they keep from family members, colleagues, and even close friends. By learning these secrets, you would be developing your emotional intelligence.

You would also know why they feel the way they do which could help you fix or change that behavior for the better.

There are many ways to improve your ability to listen, such as by using headphones and practicing with people in private or group settings.

Another method is to ask more questions and make attempts to understand how they feel before moving onto next topic.

Final thought: You don’t need to use all of these strategies at once but should try one or two every day to see results.

Don’t be egotistical

how to develop emotional intelligence

One of the most important things that can hinder your emotional intelligence is being too self-focused. You have to understand yourself, but you also need to acknowledge how you affect others.

You have to realize that your actions will have consequences. When these consequences are negative, it can hurt someone else — maybe even very much someone else. This could be due to a lack of empathy or because something bad happens as a result of you behaving in a way that isn’t productive.

By the same token, when good things happen, they can bring happiness to another person, which makes them feel better about themselves and their life. This boost in confidence can keep them moving forward with their lives.

So rather than thinking only about what you want for yourself, try thinking more about what you can do for other people – not just now, but in the long term. Help them achieve their goals, inspire them, give them strength and encouragement.

This may mean putting aside some money for them or sharing your own experiences so that they can learn from you.

Be humble

Sometimes we get so focused on having all of the answers that we forget how important it is to acknowledge our mistakes. We also underestimate just how difficult life can be, and what people go through because they are not as well adjusted as us.

We sometimes take things for granted when others work hard for us. For example, someone may spend hours every day working to pay your bills while you sit and watch TV.

It may feel like they don’t appreciate you or what you have done for them, but maybe they just want to see you face failure. You should never assume anything about anyone else’s success or lack thereof, including yourself.

Everyone has their own personal struggles in life, which makes it hard to relate to other people. A lot of times, socialization depends on commonalities you do not know about until you apply effort to learn them.

Developing emotional intelligence will help you understand these differences and use this knowledge to succeed in life. It will also teach you how to accept and respect those who are different from you, instead of feeling threatened or insecure.

Be honest with yourself and try to look at yourself as others might view you. If you cannot admit you made a mistake, start thinking about why that was a good thing.
