Over the past decade, emotional intelligence (EI) has become one of the most popular leadership theories and strategies. It looks at how well you control your emotions and what effects those emotions have on others.

Many believe that it can be improved through education and training. There are many different types of courses that teach EI, with some focusing more on understanding yourself and your emotions, while other courses focus more on helping you manage the emotions of others.

However, no matter which type of course you take, studying emotion does not work unless you apply the lessons in everyday life. This is where things get tricky.

Most people do not learn anything from a theory about emotion until they apply the knowledge to real-life situations. Unfortunately, there are many reasons why this is difficult to do.

This article will discuss several ways to enhance your emotional intelligence even as quickly as two weeks. The three main points discussed include developing relationships, learning how to recognize and handle anger, and using patience with yourself and others.

Introduction

There was a time when being able to read other people’s emotions was seen as an excellent skill for anyone to possess. Back then, people who could not understand or identify someone else’s emotions were considered weak and inexperienced.

These days, however, our society values individuals who are very aware of and capable of changing their own emotions over others’.

Have patience

how to enhance emotional intelligence

A lot of people have emotional intelligence, but they’re not using it because they lack one of the keys to effective use of this quality – patience.

Everyone has given up on things at some point in their lives. Sometimes we get so annoyed or frustrated with something that we decide to just give up and start doing something else instead. We could be trying to read a book and you might make us give up if you cannot stop talking for three minutes.

By giving up, we usually waste our time as we would need to find another way to accomplish what we wanted to do.

If someone is causing us stress, then why should we keep spending time together? Why should we try to talk to them when they are being annoying?

We can always choose to walk away, but staying longer than necessary costs us energy which can sometimes be limited depending on how busy we are.

When we run out of steam, we will probably fail to achieve our goal. This is not a good situation to be in!

So, whether you are working on your emotional intelligence or not, it is important to understand the value of having enough patience.

It will help you deal better with others, maintain relationships, and succeed in life.

Make eye contact

how to enhance emotional intelligence

Looking into someone’s eyes can help you connect with them, show that you care about what they have to say, and indicate whether they make you feel confident or not. It is one of the most powerful nonverbal cues we use every day!

Making direct eye contact with people is an excellent way to establish rapport and trust. When you look people in the eye, your brain perceives it as more sincere than when you don’t.[1]

When you are talking to someone, try to focus on their face for at least a couple seconds. If you are able to maintain eye contact for a few minutes, even better!

Keep doing this until the other person breaks the gaze. The easier you make it for yourself, the higher your emotional intelligence will be. You want to avoid looking away unless the other person does.

Your subconscious mind processes pictures and videos much faster than words so if you need time to process something, do not hold back on showing those parts of yourself to the other person.

Running through all these rules takes practice but will only improve your relationships. Try giving this a little bit of your attention today and see how it changes your perception and interaction with others.

Be realistic

how to enhance emotional intelligence

A lot of theories about emotional intelligence focus too much on having lots of emotions and being able to control your emotions. That is only part of it, however.

In fact, there are some studies that suggest people with high levels of emotional intelligence actually suffer from what’s been called “alexithymia.” This means they are not good at identifying their own feelings and instead learn how to suppress them.

So, while someone who has very strong emotion regulation skills may be very well-adjusted, it doesn’t mean they are happy or that things went their way just because they were able to keep calm for a few minutes.

They might have learned to put off showing their true self until they got home, for example. Or maybe they never really let anyone in enough to know what you really think of them.

Share your experiences

Learning how to enhance emotional intelligence is about learning how to recognize, understand and manage your emotions. It also means practicing them until they’re in control. But before you start teaching yourself this skill, you have to know what kind of student you are.

If you can identify and describe your own feelings, then it’s easy to apply these lessons to someone else. You’ll be able to see when something is happening for another person and help them through that experience.

So take some time to really think about why those things matter to you and how you feel around certain people. Then do the same thing with other people – learn their strengths and weaknesses, and where they show emotion.

This way you’ll be prepared if anyone needs your support or guidance. Keep an open mind, and remember that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses.

Your job as a supporter isn’t to fix whoever you’re helping — it’s just to let them get back into their groove.

Be honest with your peers

how to enhance emotional intelligence

As mentioned earlier, one of the major components of emotional intelligence is being able to identify and understand what emotions other people are feeling.

This can be tricky because not everyone may disclose all their inner thoughts and feelings. This is especially true for teens who have trouble understanding how others feel due to developmental issues.

However, you should never assume that someone else isn’t aware of something unless they tell you so. For example, if someone next to you on the bus is crying, ask them why they are upset and see if they will talk about it. If they do, listen to them carefully and try to figure out what made them that way.

If possible, give them some type of reassurance or help them get through the situation.

Listen to others closely

Develop your listening skills is an important part of emotional intelligence. When you listen well, you are paying attention to what other people are saying and how they are saying it. You also learn about them when you listen to their tone, how they speak, what emotions they show, and what actions they take while talking.

This can help you understand why someone else may be feeling a certain way or doing something. It can also give you insight into their personality because you get a sense of what buttons they have pressed before.

When you develop your listening skills, you will find that conversations flow more naturally for you.

Don’t be egotistical

how to enhance emotional intelligence

Even if you’re never called egocentric, it can still hurt your emotional intelligence. You may think that because you don’t talk about yourself much, people view you as less self-focused. But research shows that when others perceive you as more focused on other people than on yourself, they’ll keep their distance.

If you need to talk about yourself, do so modestly. No one wants to listen to someone who seems obsessed with themselves all the time. “I’m the most important person in the world” isn’t very appealing.

On the contrary, we like people who are aware of their strengths and weaknesses, who aren’t afraid to acknowledge a mistake or fail. We admire people who are not only confident but also authentic — meaning they speak without pretense.

It’s easy to forget that what makes you unique doesn’t always make you feel good about yourself. Take a moment every now and then to reflect on how you’ve succeeded and failed, and learn from both.

Be humble

how to enhance emotional intelligence

Humility is one of the most important qualities for emotional intelligence. This quality allows you to acknowledge your mistakes and weaknesses, as well as those of others. It also means not having too high of expectations or goals that are beyond your current level.

By being aware of your limitations, you can work towards improving yourself by putting in the effort into learning new things. You will realize that everyone has their own special talents and skills that they bring to life.

There’s an old saying that says ‘the more people think they know, the more they believe they don’t know.’ I like this quote because it reminds us that we all have something to teach each other, and our teammates can help us grow.

If someone else is much better at something than you, try to learn from them. Ask how they got there and what helped them feel confident in themselves. Also, agree to disagree about things so that you can both win the argument.
