Emotional intelligence (or EQ as it is sometimes called) has become one of the most popular psychology theories in recent years. It looks at how well you manage your emotions, and how these different emotions relate to each other.

Some experts believe that we should all strive to develop our emotional intelligence because it can have profound effects on our overall health and happiness.

Others argue that this theory does not seem supported by the evidence and that focusing too much time and energy on developing your EQ could even be harmful for your mental and physical wellbeing.

Either way, improving your emotional intelligence is definitely something worth trying out. In this article, we will discuss some ways to boost your EQ through no matter what life presents you with.

Disclaimer: The content in this article was written with emphasis on possible strategies for men but can easily be adapted to apply to women also. While there are some concepts which may feel specific to either gender, none of them require having a female or male brain. They can all help you improve your emotional regulation and understand yourself and others.

Have patience

When someone does something that makes you feel bad, try to be more understanding of their actions. It could be something small like leaving without saying goodbye or it could be something bigger like cheating on you with another person.

The thing about humans is we tend to want things that don’t make us happy. I know this from personal experience because I was once in a relationship where my girlfriend would do things that made me feel horrible and then tell me how much she loved me.

It took me months before I could give up and believe her when she said she didn’t love me anymore.

So, if you find yourself in a situation where someone has done something they have promised not to do, try to hold off your judgement for as long as possible. You might also need to learn how to forgive them so that you can move on.

Bear in mind that forgiveness doesn’t mean what they did was okay, but just because you’re able to accept an action doesn’t mean that everyone else will.

There are times when what people do hurts you badly, but that doesn’t mean you should hurt them back. Keep your emotions in check at all costs.

No one deserves to be treated poorly and you’ll be saving yourself some serious emotional distress if you keep such lessons in store.

Make eye contact

A lot of people feel that when they look away from someone their conversations are over, but this is not true at all! Breaking eye contact can actually hurt your emotional connection with someone. When you look down or avoid looking someone in the eyes, it can make them feel like you do not trust them or believe in their words.

When you look someone in the eyes, you show respect for who they are and what they say. Making direct eye contact shows that you believe they are worth talking to and listening to. It also gives off an open feeling, as though you want to know more about them.

Breaking eye contact can sometimes be done for very good reasons, but just because you cannot be bothered does not mean you should give up. If you have something on your mind, then try to take some time to focus on that instead.

If possible, see someone else during the break so that there is still some form of communication left. Having some kind of interaction will help reduce the effect that breaking eye contact has on others.

Be realistic

A lot of theories about emotional intelligence (EI) assume that you can either have high EI or low EI, just like with other traits such as being tall or short. This isn’t true! There are some studies that suggest people in the middle range of EI are the most successful because they know when it is appropriate to use their emotions and how to use them effectively.

If you want to improve your emotional quotient, then don’t focus only on trying to be more emotionally intelligent, also try to reduce your emotional intensity.

Emotions are powerful tools, but they can hurt others and yourself if you overuse them. So, aim to achieve balance by using emotions for good and not for bad.

Share your experiences

Most people are not very emotional, which is why there are so many cases of rich people staying that way for long. If someone has never experienced an angry moment before, they may not understand what it means to you when things get tense.

If someone doesn’t know how you feel, it can make them think that you don’t care about them or that you don’t love them. This could hurt their feelings really badly and even cause them to give up on trying to help you.

By being aware of other people’s emotions, you will be better at helping them deal with theirs. They will trust you more because they will believe that you want to see them succeed like everyone else does.

You also need to realize that some situations cannot be avoided no matter what you do. Sometimes things just happen and you have to accept this and move on. Learning how to control your own emotions helps in such circumstances.

Be honest with your peers

As mentioned before, one of the most important things that can improve your emotional intelligence is learning how to be truthful with people around you. This could be telling someone they are wrong, telling them what you really think, or just being straightforward when asked about something.

Everyone has different levels of honesty depending on who they are and what kind of person they believe themselves to be. For example, some people may not tell full truths to their superiors but will talk openly to friends so if you were never able to say everything you wanted to in past relationships, this would be a good way to fix that problem!

By practicing honesty, you’ll learn how to relate to other people more effectively and help you achieve your goals and dreams. You’ll also feel happier because you’ll be less stressed out and engaged in activity that helps you grow as a person.

Listen to others closely

A lot of people have a belief about how much empathy they have, which makes them reluctant to acknowledge it when it is lacking. People who think they are not very empathic may be more likely to listen well to someone else’s story, or read something written by someone else.

It is important to recognize that we all have different levels of empathy, and some people seem to lack it more than other do. But if you want to improve your own level of empathy, you must work to hone your skill.

You can learn how to empathize with others by practicing, so look for opportunities to do so. Read personal stories, talk to people in person or online, watch documentaries or TV shows that include storytelling.

Taking time to understand what has an effect on someone else will help you identify ways to show compassion.

Don’t be egotistical

how to improve your emotional intelligence

Even if you don’t think you are, people will always know what you do and how you behave. Therefore, it is important to control your behaviour and put more effort into being less egocentric.

This can be difficult at times because we all like to feel that we are not only smart but also good and valuable.

We sometimes forget that we have other responsibilities apart from thinking about ourselves.

Other people depend on us and even though they may not say it out loud, they probably want us to succeed more than we realize.

If you would like to improve your emotional intelligence, try giving up some of these self-focused habits.

Be humble

how to improve your emotional intelligence

Most people have a very strong sense of self-importance that comes from having little experience with things, thinking they are better than everyone else because they can put together a sentence more frequently than anyone else.

They also think they know what is best for you when in fact they are only setting themselves up as your authority figure and subconsciously trying to prove that they are more important than you.

This isn’t healthy for your emotional health nor yours relationship with them.

Be conscious of this tendency and work to reduce it by being aware of how much you know and believe you have found the answer to all of life’s problems.

You don’t!

Your knowledge and understanding will be limited which is okay – we’re human after all. We’ll never find out everything there is to know about the world so why try?

Also remember that not every person has the same experiences as you do and doesn’t go through the same feelings as you do.

Embrace these differences and understand that others’ opinions matter, but only if they make you feel good and help you grow.

Don’t get too focused on changing who other people are or getting their approval though -that won’t help you gain anything.

It’ll just make you unhappy.
