Many people believe that being smart is enough to succeed in life. Being intelligent makes you rich, famous, and/or powerful, but it is not the only thing that matters. In fact, some experts say that emotional intelligence (EI) is what really sets successful individuals apart from others.

Successful people are not necessarily smarter than other people, they just seem more aware of and controlled by their emotions. It is estimated that having strong EI can help improve your overall mental health and success in career, personal relationships, and family life.

This article will discuss how to test your own level of emotional intelligence and learn ways to enhance it. You do not need to be very advanced with this information to feel better about yourself, your relationship skills, or ability to manage stress, but you should be able to recognize your strengths and weaknesses.

Emotions have a lot to tell us. We get most of our feelings from experiences we have before, so testing out your levels of emotional intelligence can be done at any time. This article contains easy tips for improving your emotional literacy and self-awareness.

Have patience

how to test your emotional intelligence

There is no quick fix for emotional intelligence. It takes work, effort, and repeated attempts at changing your behavior to achieve success. This can be difficult if you’re not used to putting in that kind of effort.

Most people have a hard time believing this because they think there are “self-help” books or courses that tell them to improve their emotional quotient (EQ).

These types of programs seem too good to be true so many people give up before it even starts.

It’s like trying to eat healthy food while also eating fast food every day. You’ll never make real changes until you make sacrifices by giving yourself less unhealthy junk, but once you do, you’ll know what to order!

The same goes for improving your EQ. You have to be willing to make changes that may not be easy at first but will eventually pay off.

There is one big difference between having low self-esteem and having low emotional intelligence. With the first, you feel bad about yourself and believe you are worthless, whereas with the second, you sometimes feel overwhelmed by strong emotions, which makes you unsure of how to respond to situations.

This is why it’s important to try to understand your own feelings and identify the source of your emotions. You don’t need to control all of your emotions, but knowing who you are under pressure helps you cope better.

Make eye contact

Let’s look at some examples of making direct eye contact. If you ever feel like someone is looking past you, make an effort to meet their gaze. It may take practice, but eventually you will realize that most people have a thing about making eyes with others.

It makes them feel comfortable and/or interested. Plus, it shows respect! When we avoid eye contact, we sometimes don’t feel respected or important.

Making direct eye contact can be tricky at first because we usually develop habits of avoiding eye contact when we were young. However, as you grow older you should try to minimize this habit.

Practice making eye contact every day for one minute. Also, do not let yourself get distracted while doing so. The more you work on it, the easier it will become.

Your emotional intelligence will improve if you are aware of your own emotions. Then, you will know how to recognize other peoples’ emotions and use that information to understand what they are going through.

Be realistic

Most people who test their emotional intelligence use very specific, standardized tests that have been validated against actual conversations with others. These tests ask about how well you perceive and regulate your emotions, how you deal with other people’s emotions, and whether you are able to identify your own feelings.

However, what most people fail to realize is that being emotionally intelligent isn’t something you learn through courses or training programs. It’s not like taking an emotion class at school where you get a good grade.

Instead, it goes beyond knowing just a few things about yourself and other people’s emotions. It takes understanding how different parts of your life influence your mood, and learning how to manage those influences in order to enjoy your personal relationships and career more.

You also need to be aware of how much energy you spend on keeping up appearances, and whether these appearances match what really makes you happy. All of this can add up to having a healthier mental health.

Be honest with your self

how to test your emotional intelligence

One of the biggest reasons people get stuck in unhappy relationships is because they’re not honest with themselves about what makes them feel valued and loved.

If you spend time thinking about how much your partner doesn’t appreciate you, or how their actions make you feel bad, then it can start to seem like an endless cycle.

This sort of negative thinking will only perpetuate more unhappiness for you. You have to work hard to remove that negativity from your mind – which is difficult when you’ve got no proof that what you’re feeling isn’t legitimate.

You’ll also need to be able to recognize when you’re acting on feelings rather than facts – something most of us struggle with at times.

So try being more open with yourself about the things you do and don’t agree with in your relationship. Ask yourself if what he/she does makes you happy or dissatisfied. If it’s the latter, do some research and see whether there are any other options.

Be honest with others

Testing your emotional intelligence is not about being able to show how much empathy you have, or knowing what emotions are like, it’s being aware of your own feelings.

That means being able to recognize them and then deciding if they’re positive or negative before changing anything about yourself.

You can’t really test your EQ unless you’re willing to be honest with people so that you know what kind of reactions you get.

This could mean telling someone who made a bad joke that it was funny, or telling a friend he/she shouldn’t worry about something because you don’t think they can handle it.

It also includes admitting to yourself things you’ve done that hurt other people, even if you meant to do it for a good reason.

Running away from your problems won’t help you develop your self-awareness nor will ignoring them.

Understand your emotions

A large part of emotional intelligence is understanding your own emotions. You can’t effectively manage someone else’s mood unless you understand your own, so take some time to learn about yourself.

Many people develop skills for managing their own emotions by observing and analyzing the behaviors they use to deal with different feelings. For example, when a friend tells you that something has gone terribly wrong, you could choose to become angry or depressed depending on what level of anger you feel in you at that moment.

By practicing this technique, you will hone your ability to recognize your own feelings and then how to control them. Also, being aware of your own strengths and weaknesses helps you identify appropriate strategies for dealing with other people.

Understand others

how to test your emotional intelligence

Testing your emotional intelligence means understanding how other people feel, and what makes them feel that way. This is influenced not only by things they say, but also by their actions, how they respond to you, and whether they share similar emotions with you.

There are several ways to test your empathy or “theory of mind” as it’s known in psychology. Some of the most common tests look for examples of someone else having an argument, then showing how you would react if that was you who lost an argument. Or asking about something that made another person unhappy, and seeing how you would feel if that happened to you.

Some of the more difficult questions in these types of tests require you to think about something that has no direct application. For example, asking why someone may have said bad things to you can be tricky unless you’re in a situation where someone often says hurtful things to people.

But there are some situations that anyone can apply these theories to. For instance, if someone got into an argument with someone else in a crowded place, then we have an idea of how they might behave if they were in such a crowd themselves and someone took offence.

Be a lifelong learner

how to test your emotional intelligence

There are many ways to test your emotional intelligence (EI). You don’t need to know how to do anything beyond your current skill set, but it can be helpful to understand some of the factors that influence EI.

That is why it is important to consider whether this tool is something you will use every day or if it is a nice-to-have thing. Some people may never take advantage of this talent because they believe they already have enough self-awareness.

If you’re in the first group, don’t worry! It’s totally normal to feel more confident in certain areas than others.

By being aware of your strengths and weaknesses, though, you can start developing strategies to improve your overall EQ.
