People are often focused only on your logical or rational skills when it comes to emotional intelligence. That is why they may perceive someone as having strong emotions, when in fact that person does not have enough control over his or her own feelings.

However, understanding how you feel and the ability to manage those feelings are essential parts of emotional intelligence. In this article, we will discuss some ways to develop your empathy (the perception and experience of other people’s emotions) and emotion regulation (how you handle yourself emotionally during stressful times).

Emotion regulation can be done by thinking about what you are feeling and then either letting go of the feeling or changing the intensity of the feeling. For example, if you are angry with someone, you can try to think about what would make them feel better instead of getting more angry.

Other examples of strategies include trying to distract yourself from an argument or topic of conversation so that it stops bothering you, practicing relaxation techniques, and asking others to put off talking about something difficult for a little while until you’ve calmed down.

This article will talk about several different strategies for developing your empathy and emotion regulation. You do not need to use all of these tools together but should at least try one out every week.

Link between emotional intelligence and happiness

how to understand emotional intelligence

Recent studies show that there is a strong link between having high levels of emotional intelligence (EI) and being happier in your life.

Research has shown that people who are able to recognize their emotions, understand what makes them feel different feelings, and are aware of how they influence others are likely to be happier than individuals with lower scores on EI tests.

It’s thought that when you’re more aware of your own thoughts and feelings, and learn how other people’s behaviors affect you, then you’ll try harder to identify the reasons why you’re feeling a certain way and work to fix them or avoid them in the future.

This will help you achieve greater personal balance and contentment in your life.

Link between emotional intelligence and success

Many believe that being emotionally intelligent is only important in professional life, but this assumption ignores the link between emotional intelligence and personal success.

We all have certain skills related to emotion regulation — for example, you may be able to identify and manage your emotions well when you are with people you care about, but could not survive without access to internet services.

Similarly, you may be very good at putting on a show of bravado or indifference when you’re not really feeling anything, but would soon burn with rage if someone wronged you.

There are even professionals who learn how to suppress their emotions completely so that they can get things done more efficiently, but still feel some depth of compassion towards others.

However, none of these examples imply low levels of emotional intelligence. In fact, there are studies which suggest that having high levels of emotional intelligence helps keep us happier overall.

Ways to improve emotional intelligence

One of the most important skills you can develop is your ability to recognize, understand, and manage your own emotions.

Many experts believe that we are all born with a certain amount of emotional intelligence (EI).

Some people seem to have more EI than others, but no one is completely devoid of it.

However, there is a wide difference in how much someone has of this quality depending on their individual level of empathy and sympathy.

It’s also true that over time, some individuals grow in EI while other people get weaker in relation to emotion.

Something that helps people with low levels of emotional intelligence is trying to be aware and understanding of their feelings. This is called identifying or labeling your emotions.

On the other hand, practicing relaxation or meditation may help people with limited emotional regulation take control of their stress-related experiences.

There are many different techniques for both of these activities so pick one that works for you.

Seek out emotional intelligence in others

One of the most important things you can do as a person is to recognize your own emotions, and understand why you feel them. You’ll learn how to manage your emotions by understanding what makes you feel this way and learning how to regulate your feelings.

Many people have a tendency to think that their personal success is only related to their work life or career, but it goes much deeper than that.

Your level of emotional intelligence comes down to how well you relate to other people – whether they are close friends, family members, colleagues or strangers. It also includes your perception and interpretation of situations, as well as your ability to control your reactions to things.

Research has shown that there is a link between someone’s emotional quotient (EQ) and his or her overall health and happiness.

Practice meditation

One of the most fundamental ways to increase emotional intelligence is to practice mindfulness. This can be done through regular, daily practices like yoga or meditation.

Mindfulness comes from Buddhism and was adapted for use in psychology with the development of Mind-Body therapies. It focuses on paying attention to what you are doing at this moment — breathing, listening to music, thinking about something else, etc.

This process is called “paying full attention” because it requires taking your mind away from other things so that you can focus exclusively on what you are doing now.

By practicing mindfulness every day, you will find that your moods become more stable and balanced. You will also feel happier overall due to the effects of mindfulness on brain chemistry.

There are many different types of mindfulness exercises. Some people choose to sit quietly and think about their breath for a set amount of time, while others may choose to listen to soft music or perform some type of movement (like walking or dancing).

Whatever kind of exercise you pick, just make sure you learn how to do it properly! Haphazardly performing a activity without first learning the fundamentals could actually hurt your mental health.

Get enough sleep

Sleeping well is one of the most important things you can do for your emotional health. When we are not getting adequate rest, our moods fluctuate more frequently- we are happier some days and less happy others.

When we are sleeping poorly, what comes up in our minds is usually related to past events or concerns about life. This makes it harder to put off thoughts that may make us feel bad and motivate us to take action towards goals.

We also tend to drink more due to stress, which can have negative effects on us. Drinking too much can cause problems such as headaches, illness, and weight gain.

Drinking too often can be an expensive habit that sets you back financially. It’s best to know how much people should drink and when (for e.g., drinking alcohol after work is totally acceptable), but knowing how many drinks you consume per week is just as important.

Eat your feelings

A lot of people try to avoid their emotions, but this is a very inefficient way to live. By refusing to feel things you are actually creating more problems for yourself.

By avoiding your feelings, you prevent them from going away. You may also end up denying parts of yourself that make you feel good about yourself.

So instead of trying to ignore or suppress your emotional responses, how can we use them? Learning how to manage your emotions takes practice, and it’s not something you achieve immediately, but rather over time.

But there is a tool that has been proven to be effective in helping people learn how to understand and control their own emotions — practicing what is called “self-compassion.”[1]

Self-compassion means paying attention to and caring about yourself with kindness and understanding just like you would anyone else. It involves recognizing when you’re making mistakes and giving yourself some slack before you start judging yourself too harshly.

Be consistent

how to understand emotional intelligence

Consistency is one of the biggest keys to emotional intelligence. If you’re never in touch with your emotions, it becomes difficult to understand what other people are feeling and doing.

If you’ve got lots of energy, you may not realize that some things have you stressed out or irritated when there’s no reason for this. You might assume that someone else didn’t show up because they “didn’t feel like it,” even though they probably just wanted to be alone.

With EI, consistency is important because it helps us relate to others. We know how people respond to things, so we can use that as a starting point to figure out what makes them happy and why they behave the way they do.

Consistently good relationships are built on understanding and respecting each other, which takes emotional awareness.
