OpenAI and Sur Energy Launch $25 Billion AI Hub in Patagonia

OpenAI and Sur Energy are investing $25 billion to create “Stargate Argentina,” a colossal AI hub in Patagonia. This project aims to position Argentina as Latin America’s top provider of AI computational power, driven by abundant renewable energy.

In a move that transcends mere technological advancement, Argentina’s windswept Patagonia region is poised to become a cornerstone of the global artificial intelligence landscape, thanks to an unprecedented $25 billion investment from OpenAI, the visionary force behind ChatGPT, and Sur Energy, a clean energy venture with deep Argentine roots.

This monumental undertaking, dubbed “Stargate Argentina,” is not merely an infrastructure project.

It is, as insiders openly admit, a profound geopolitical statement, knitting the South American nation into the fabric of US strategic interests in the burgeoning AI era.

The scale of ambition is breathtaking.

With an estimated total investment reaching up to $25 billion, this mega data center is set to be the largest infrastructure project in Argentina’s history and, remarkably, the most significant chapter in OpenAI’s global “Stargate” initiative.

The goal is clear: to transform Argentina into Latin America’s premier AI hub, generating and exporting the colossal computational power that will fuel the next generation of intelligent systems worldwide.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, articulated the project’s broader vision, stating, “This milestone goes beyond infrastructure. It’s about putting artificial intelligence in the hands of the people of all Argentina.”

While the sentiment is inclusive, the strategic underpinnings are undeniable.

Sources close to the deal reveal that OpenAI’s choice of Argentina is heavily influenced by the strong relationship between the country and the United States, citing “affinity” and a shared vision for regional leadership.

This isn’t just about silicon and servers; it’s about cementing alliances in a world increasingly defined by technological supremacy.

Sur Energy, a company founded by Argentine entrepreneurs and investors in the US, will shoulder the primary responsibility for financing and constructing this colossal facility.

Co-founder Emiliano Kargieman, also known for his work with microsatellite firm Satellogic, emphasized the unique confluence of factors making Argentina ideal: “Now is the time to install AI data centers in Latin America. Being a pioneer is a huge advantage.

The regulatory framework and geopolitical alignment make Argentina the right scenario. The potential is truly enormous.”

OpenAI, in turn, will serve as the “offtaker,” committing to purchase all the computational power generated, thereby guaranteeing the project’s viability and scale.

The first phase of development is slated to begin next year, with an aggressive 12-month completion target.

This initial tranche alone is projected to command an investment of between $7 billion and $10 billion, a figure that dwarfs many national infrastructure budgets.

Five potential locations within Patagonia are currently under review, chosen for their abundant renewable energy resources—a critical factor given the insatiable power demands of modern AI.

Indeed, the energy component is central to this grand vision.

Sur Energy’s model integrates advanced technology with sustainable energy solutions.

At full scale, the Patagonian data center will boast an astonishing 500 megawatts of capacity, a figure that dramatically overshadows the current total demand of approximately 150 megawatts across all of Latin America.

The initial $7 billion construction cost covers the physical structure, power systems, and cooling infrastructure.

The true heart of the operation—the Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) that perform the complex AI calculations—will be integrated incrementally, scaling with demand.

Agreements are already in place with local energy giants Central Puerto and Genneia for power provision, with an eye towards potentially incorporating nuclear energy in the future, a concept championed by Demian Reidel, former chief advisor to President Javier Milei and a close friend of the late Mat Travizano.

The project carries a poignant human dimension.

Mat Travizano, a physicist, successful entrepreneur, and investor, was a key architect behind this groundbreaking initiative.

His untimely death in a climbing accident just a month ago cast a shadow, yet his vision lives on.

Kargieman, visibly moved, declared, “Mat should be here, announcing this mega project. We will continue with his idea and legacy.”

Travizano, along with Reidel, was instrumental in facilitating President Milei’s meeting with Sam Altman in Silicon Valley last year, where the “Argentina AI hub” concept truly gained momentum.

For Argentina, “Stargate Argentina” represents more than just a tech investment; it’s a strategic pivot.

The project will leverage the country’s RIGI (Regime for Incentive for Large Investments), signaling the government’s commitment to creating a stable and attractive environment for foreign capital.

Beyond the immediate economic injection, the initiative promises to create high-quality jobs, attract further international investment, and position Argentina as a crucial player in the global digital and energy maps.

OpenAI’s confidence in Argentina isn’t solely based on geopolitical alignment.

The company recognizes Argentina as an emerging AI powerhouse, noting its robust developer ecosystem, rapid social adoption of AI technologies, and the significant percentage of local businesses already integrating AI solutions.

Recent data from OpenAI shows ChatGPT usage in Argentina has tripled over the past year, placing the country among the top five in Latin America for paid subscriptions and API adoption.

This rapid diffusion of AI, the report suggests, is already translating into measurable productivity gains and economic growth.

As the world hurtles into an AI-powered future, the “Stargate Argentina” project is a bold declaration.

It is a testament to the power of vision, the strategic importance of energy, and the unexpected geopolitical shifts that are redefining global influence.

Patagonia, once a remote frontier, is now set to become a vital nexus, quietly humming with the computational might that will drive tomorrow’s intelligence, firmly placing Argentina on the cutting edge of the digital age.
