Over the past few years, emotional intelligence (or EQ for short) has become one of the most popular psychology theories. It looks at how well you control your emotions and what kind of emotions you have in order to succeed in life.

Many believe that it can help you achieve your career goals and improve relationships with family members and friends. In fact, some companies make its use a requirement as part of their employment.

While there is no conclusive proof that EQ is better than other traits such as IQ, many people feel that it can’t hurt anything. Plus, researchers are constantly finding new ways to apply this theory in the workplace and in everyday life.

In this article, we will talk about three different types of EQ and how they relate to the movie The Martian.

Definition and importance of emotional intelligence

What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence (EI) is defined as “the ability to recognize, assess, control, and manage your own emotions, and those of others”. It is also referred to as self-awareness or self-regulation. This means that you are aware of your internal feelings and how they affect other people around you.

Importance of emotional intelligence

Many things in life depend on someone being emotionally intelligent. For example, professionals such as teachers, nurses, social workers, police officers, and managers work with individuals and/or groups of people every day.

Their job can easily include interacting with different personalities, which often requires a high level of empathy and understanding of diverse beliefs and attitudes. Teachers who are able to connect with their students and motivate them to learn will succeed where others may not.

Nurses must be able to identify patients’ symptoms and worries so that they can help them feel better. Social workers have to be careful to avoid any kind of conflict while helping families deal with difficult situations. Police officers need to be able to understand and de-escalate tense situations if necessary.

Relationship with happiness

A major aspect of emotional intelligence is how you relate to other people, and how well they feel when they are around you.

Many experts believe that being happy is an integral part of developing your emotional intelligence.

So why don’t we all seem to be as happy as we could be? It’s because many of us get into ruts- we repeat the same behaviors over and over again, and eventually the rest of the world catches onto it and doesn’t put up with them anymore.

We develop relationships with unhappy individuals, and soon they have earned our contempt instead of our friendship.

Conversational skills go out the window as hurt feelings come flooding in, and we stop trying to bring things back from where they left off.

It can also be difficult to recognize and acknowledge your own strengths, which contribute to not only feeling less confident, but more stressed out as well.

When you’re in a bad mood, you’re going to act like someone in a bad mood, so those around you will probably make themselves uncomfortable or even angry. This may set a negative cycle down for others, and for you.

You’ll spend time worrying about what else might upset you, and this can carry over into other areas of your life.

What does it mean to be an emotionally intelligent person?

A few other terms describe this quality of yours, including self-awareness, empathy, and control of your emotions. Some refer to it as emotional intelligence or EQ.

“Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize our feelings and then use that knowledge to motivate us to take action and improve ourselves,” says Dr. Jennifer Thompson, psychologist and author of The Power of Positive Thinking According to Merriam-Webster, ‘positive thinking’ means believing that things will work out for you in life, even when they do not at first.

This isn’t always a good thing! Sometimes we need to feel bad before we can feel better, which helps us develop resilience and strength. So while negative thoughts may help you get through some difficult times, trying to think only about what you don’t have rather than what you do could actually be counterproductive.

Ways to improve your emotional intelligence

Developing your emotional quotient (EQ) is an integral part of being healthy in life. You’re probably already aware that people who are happier tend to live longer than individuals who aren’t as joyful.

But what you might not know is that there are specific things you can do to increase your overall EQ. This includes having more empathy, using positive thinking skills, and learning how to manage your stressors and emotions.

There are several strategies for improving your emotional intelligence, but none of them require any special training or education. Anyone can achieve this! It just takes practice, practice, and then some more practice.

And while most of us have a natural tendency towards having high levels of emotional intelligence, it’s possible to develop your ability to feel emotionally intelligent even if you don’t currently qualify as someone with a high level of EQ.

Connect with your feelings

Sometimes we get so focused on trying to make other people feel good about themselves or keep them happy that we forget to take care of ourselves.

This can have disastrous effects on our mental health. If you try too hard to put others first, you may be sacrificing relationships that mean something to you, setting yourself up for loneliness and depression.

By putting in extra effort to be likeable, to keep the peace at all costs, you could be depriving yourself of things you want (or need) from life.

It’s important to remember that being liked is not the most significant thing in this world. Being lovable, however, is.

And when you learn how to love yourself, you’ll enjoy happier times. You’ll connect more easily with others and will feel healthier physically.

You’ll also find it easier to achieve goals and reduce stress. And you’ll reap the benefits of inner strength, confidence and tranquility.

Look at your reactions

We are constantly drawing attention to what we are doing, who we are interacting with, and how we are responding to everything around us.

We have a lot of thoughts going through our brains all the time. Some are positive, but many are negative.

Some thoughts help us achieve our goals, while others keep us from them.

It is important to recognize your own emotions and why you are feeling a certain way about something. You can then use that knowledge to better yourself or improve your relationships.

You will want to look inwards to determine what is causing your emotional response. Is it because of someone else? Because of a situation? What is happening outside of you – has something happened that affected you beyond this person, place or thing?

If you notice yourself becoming irritated, angry, frustrated or stressed when you do not know the answer to any of these questions, it may be worth looking into whether there is more than one party involved.

Be honest with your peers

psychologist emotional intelligence

As mentioned earlier, one of emotional intelligence is being able to recognize and understand your own emotions. However, it goes beyond that — it also includes knowing how to identify and manage the emotions of others.

This can be tricky because we all have different levels of intensity when it comes to certain feelings. For example, someone who has never received good news may find it difficult to relate to people who just learned their child was diagnosed with cancer.

On the other hand, some people are very good at changing their facial expressions to match what they perceive another person’s emotions to be. So, instead of using the same expression as them, they might show less emotion than they normally would in order to match what you’re feeling.

Both of these things could easily confuse someone for why you feel the way you do so try to be conscious of this and don’t assume anything. If there is something that makes you feel bad, ask yourself if this is really the case or if you are projecting your own inner struggles onto the world around you.

Practice meditation

While not every person’s personality is shaped by emotional intelligence, developing your EQ is definitely something you can work on. And just like any other skill, it will improve with practice- consistently putting in time to learn this trait will give you results.

Meditation is a great way to develop your emotional intelligence. There are many types of mediation, but they all have one thing in common: silence.

The silence of meditation can be broken up into different lengths depending on what type of meditation you do. Some people may break down their meditation as 10 minutes of breathing exercises, followed by five minutes of talking to yourself, and then a longer period of silence.

This extended silent period helps take away some of the stress that has built up from the day. It also allows your mind to focus more on relaxing instead of having conversations or thinking about things.
