In an era where technological innovation is reshaping the landscapes of defense and security, Portugal-based drone startup Tekever has made a significant mark by raising €70 million ($74 million) to bolster its dual-use drone platform.

This comes at a critical juncture when smaller, agile tech startups are increasingly challenging traditional defense giants, a trend that could redefine the industry.

Tekever’s drones, known for their versatility and sophistication, are already being deployed in the conflict in Ukraine, highlighting how unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming pivotal in modern warfare.

This funding round, spearheaded by Scottish investment firm Baillie Gifford & Co. and the NATO Innovation Fund, underscores the growing investor confidence in technologies that serve dual civilian and defense purposes.

The NATO Innovation Fund, a €1 billion venture capital fund established in 2023, is keenly focused on nurturing startups with the potential to impact defense, security, and resilience sectors.

Tekever, with its comprehensive approach to drone development—from airframe design to AI integration—fits this mold perfectly.

Their largest drone, the ARX, exemplifies this by offering command capabilities over smaller drones, thus extending its surveillance reach across diverse terrains.

Europe, as Tekever’s CEO Ricardo Mendes pointed out, finds itself at a critical crossroads.

With the war in Ukraine acting as a catalyst for technological advancement, there is a pressing need for the continent to accelerate its growth in this field.

Mendes’ call to action for Europe to “step up to the plate” is a reminder of the strategic importance of technological leadership in preserving geopolitical stability.

The company, which started its journey bootstrapping before securing a €20 million Series A funding in 2022, has not disclosed its valuation following the latest round.

It remains to be seen whether this is a Series C or an extension of a previous round.

However, the backing from a diverse group of investors, including the U.K.’s National Security Strategic Investment Fund and Silicon Valley’s Crescent Cove Advisors, signals robust confidence in Tekever’s strategic vision and capabilities.

Patrick Schneider-Sikorsky of the NATO Innovation Fund remarked on the exponential growth of the drone market in Europe since 2022, emphasizing the fund’s interest in technologies with dual applications.

Meanwhile, Chris Evdaimon from Baillie Gifford praised Tekever’s vertically integrated approach, which allows for rapid adaptation to evolving customer and battlefield needs.

Tekever’s drones have seen deployment beyond Ukraine, assisting the European Maritime Safety Agency and the U.K.’s Home Office, showcasing their versatility in both civilian and military applications.

This dual capability is a significant draw for investors and governments alike, keen on leveraging technology that bridges traditional boundaries.

As Tekever charts its course into the U.S. market, it stands as a testament to the transformative power of innovation in defense technology.

The company’s journey from a bootstrapped startup to a well-funded player in the drone industry is a narrative of strategic foresight, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of technological excellence.

In a rapidly changing world, Tekever’s rise is a compelling story of how nimble startups can not only compete with but also potentially outpace, the industry’s established giants.
