In a bold move that has sent ripples through the tech industry, President Donald Trump recently unveiled a $500 billion plan—dubbed Stargate—to construct a series of AI data centers across the United States.
This ambitious project aims not only to bolster the nation’s position in the global AI arms race but also to generate over 100,000 jobs.
However, beneath the surface of this high-profile announcement, there’s a fascinating undercurrent of innovation and competition among smaller tech companies, overshadowed by the usual tech giants.
At the heart of this initiative lies a surprising cast of characters.
While renowned names like OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle headline the project, it’s the lesser-known startups like Crusoe that are making waves.
Quietly chosen by Oracle to spearhead the construction of Stargate’s first data center, Crusoe has become emblematic of a new breed of nimble, specialized cloud computing firms known as “neoclouds.”
These neoclouds, including players like CoreWeave, Nebius Group, and Lambda, are uniquely positioned to cater to the burgeoning needs of AI companies.
Unlike their more established counterparts—Microsoft, Google, and Amazon Web Services—these firms aren’t bogged down by a plethora of unrelated corporate services.
Instead, they laser-focus on amassing powerful Nvidia chips, creating bespoke solutions for AI tasks.
Robert Brooks IV, Lambda’s VP of Revenue, aptly describes this as a wakeup call for the industry.
“When AWS and Google Cloud Platform build data centers, they’re thinking about all these extracurriculars unrelated to AI,” he notes.
It’s a sentiment that resonates with the startups themselves, who see this as an opportunity to outpace the giants with agility and precision.
However, the road ahead is not without its challenges.
While Crusoe’s rapid development of its Abilene data center is laudable, the sheer scale of the project presents significant hurdles.
Jason Hardy, CTO for AI at Hitachi Vantara, likens it to uncharted territory.
“The scale that we’re talking about here has never been done before,” he explains.
“It’s a huge undertaking that will absolutely create a bunch of jobs and great things like that.”
Yet, he cautions that it’s too early to predict how the venture will ultimately impact the landscape.
Moreover, the financial underpinnings of Stargate have come under scrutiny.
While Elon Musk casts doubt on SoftBank and OpenAI’s ability to fully fund the initiative, it’s clear that neocloud firms are moving with unprecedented speed.
Crusoe’s ability to hand over a building for tenant improvements in just six months—a process that typically takes years—is a testament to their innovative approach, which includes using pre-fabricated components for faster construction.
As the Stargate project unfolds, it’s becoming clear that the battle for AI supremacy isn’t just between nations or tech behemoths.
