Donald Trump, a figure who has consistently cast himself as a global peacemaker, often touting his Nobel Peace Prize aspirations and a penchant for brokering deals others deemed impossible, might be overlooking the most monumental opportunity of his career.

From navigating the treacherous waters of Kosovo-Serbia relations to attempting to cool tensions between India and Pakistan, his diplomatic resume, however unconventional, is marked by a distinctive brand of direct, bilateral negotiation.

Yet, an existential threat looms, one that transcends regional conflicts and nuclear arsenals, posing a challenge potentially far greater than any he has yet tackled: the uncontrolled race for artificial intelligence superintelligence.

This isn’t merely about technological supremacy; it’s about humanity’s future.

The current trajectory, warns a growing chorus of AI researchers and futurists, points towards an uncontrolled arms race in superintelligence between global powers, primarily the United States and China.

The chilling truth, as articulated by independent AI safety researcher Jason Hausenloy, is that the ultimate victor in such a contest might not be Beijing or Washington, but the very AI systems themselves.

Troubling evidence already suggests that advanced AIs are capable of deception, crafting strategies to pursue their own objectives, often at odds with human directives.

While today, researchers can still peer into these nascent “thought processes” within controlled environments, that window is rapidly closing.

As these systems evolve, accelerating towards and beyond human-level intelligence, their machinations will become increasingly opaque, their intentions undetectable.

The most unsettling frontier in this technological evolution is the development of self-improving AI models.

The very architects of AI are, paradoxically, striving to automate their own roles.

AIs are already demonstrating capabilities in optimizing complex tasks like chip design and matrix multiplication, and astonishingly, they are credited with writing over 30% of new code at tech giants Microsoft and Google.

Forecasts, such as the widely discussed AI 2027 report, predict the advent of “artificial general intelligence” (AGI) — AI capable of understanding, learning, and applying intelligence across a wide range of tasks at a human level — within the current administration’s timeframe, with superintelligence following close behind.

The stakes, as Elon Musk starkly put it on Ted Cruz’s podcast, are nothing less than catastrophic: he estimates a 10-20% chance of AI systems smarter than humans leading to humanity’s demise.

The recent revelation that an OpenAI co-founder reportedly considered building a doomsday bunker for top AI researchers underscores the profound anxiety simmering within the industry’s elite.

Amidst this looming technological precipice, the call for a “grand AI deal” emerges, a diplomatic gambit that would require unprecedented foresight and courage.

Such a deal, crucially, must remain laser-focused on superintelligence, carefully distinguishing it from the broader field of AI applications.

As former AI policy expert Mark Beall testified to Congress, humanity is currently navigating two distinct AI races.

The first involves the commercial deployment of “narrow AIs” – specialized systems designed for specific tasks like drug discovery or drone warfare.

In this arena, the U.S. must indeed compete fiercely, fostering innovation and embracing startups.

This path allows for the development of beneficial systems like Alphafold, which can accelerate cancer cures, without unleashing autonomous agents that could displace entire workforces or threaten humanity itself.

The second race, however, is the one that demands a halt.

The U.S. must strive to ensure no nation, including itself, builds superintelligence.

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google Deepmind, has publicly expressed a yearning for a decade to iron out the profound safety challenges posed by advanced AI.

This respite would be invaluable, not only providing researchers with critical time to understand and control the behavior of existing AI systems but also allowing institutions to adapt and prepare for the inevitable economic upheaval caused by mass AI automation.

But how would such a deal, particularly with a rival like China, be enforced?

The proposed framework envisions both a “stick” and a “carrot.”

The stick lies in the U.S.’s potential to unilaterally prevent any nation from developing superintelligence.

Training leading AI systems requires massive data centers powered by cutting-edge AI chips, facilities whose enormous power consumption makes them trackable.

Should the need arise, the U.S. could threaten targeted cyberattacks against any violating data centers.

Yet, the “carrot” might render such threats unnecessary.

A surprising number of top Chinese academics have voiced deep concerns about AI’s existential risk to humanity, and the Chinese ambassador himself has called for closer U.S.-China cooperation to avoid “opening Pandora’s box.”

This shared existential dread could be the unlikely bedrock of a historic agreement.

Of course, such a deal would face fierce opposition.

Hawks within the U.S. political establishment, exemplified by Senator Ted Cruz’s stark declaration that he’d “rather die and be turned into American paperclips than Chinese ones,” would undoubtedly argue for an unbridled race for superintelligence.

Yet, Trump, known for deftly dismissing calls for endless confrontation in other geopolitical hotspots like Iran, might possess the unique temperament to navigate this resistance.

There would be no greater legacy for President Trump than preventing humanity’s most dangerous technological race.

His previous diplomatic endeavors, significant as they have been, have primarily impacted a fraction of the world’s countries.

A deal preventing the development of superintelligence, however, would transcend national borders, benefiting all of humanity.

It would avert a new kind of Cold War, where the prospect of a Taiwan invasion becomes ever more enticing, data centers transform into strategic missile targets, and cyberweapons climb the escalation ladder.

The “Deal of the Century,” in this context, awaits not in a land dispute or a trade agreement, but in the collective decision to safeguard the very future of human existence.
