Many professionals today rely heavily on emotional intelligence (or EI) to succeed in their career and personal life. With all of our devices and technology, however, we are becoming less socially intelligent.

By this, they mean that we have become more focused on getting things done instead of focusing on how others feel around us.

This is particularly important as we progress through life. As you grow into an adult, your social skills will matter more than ever.

If you want to achieve success, then you must learn how to manage your own emotions, as well as those of other people.

You will find that most successful people were not just clever or good at maths or science, but also had strong social skills.

It is said that Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents because he knew when to use his empathy for someone.

He would listen intently to what they had to say before making a decision or proposing a solution.

What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to your ability to recognize, understand, manage, and use emotions for effective performance in life situations. It’s also referred to as “emotion literacy,” “self-awareness,” or “the knowledge that people are not only influenced by what you say but by how you say it,” according to The Best Way To Improve Your Emotions Is By Learning About Them.

Your EQ matters because we all have different levels of EI, and some people seem to get more positive feedback than others do from the same situation. According to one theory, those with higher EQ are better at recognizing their own feelings and reading other people’s.

That makes them more likely to determine whether someone else is happy, sad, angry, or something else instead of being distracted by their own thoughts and feelings. In fact, a study conducted at Stanford found that participants who scored highest on an empathy test were actually paid $2,000 less per year on average than individuals with lower scores.

While there’s no doubt that having high EQ comes in handy when paying bills, keeping up with friends, and negotiating, experts believe that it could play a crucial role in leadership success. After all, being able to relate to and inspire others is a key factor in leading a team away from zero and into win territory.

Factors that affect your emotional intelligence

There are several factors in your life that can have an effect on your EQ. These include things like income, education level, employment status, family environment, religion, culture, and more.

Income is clearly linked to higher EQ. The wealthier you are, the better you feel about yourself and the world around you. This feeling is called subjective high or happiness.

Education levels influence how well you perceive and use emotions in others. People with higher educations tend to think more highly of themselves, which usually comes from living a healthy lifestyle and studying psychology.

Employment status also has an impact on your EQ. If you are employed full time, you will likely have access to resources and opportunities that help you grow as a person. On the other hand, if you are unemployed or working part-time, it may be harder to motivate yourself to do anything beyond staying alive for the next paycheck.

Family environment is important because parents teach their children how to relate to people. Kids who experience poor relationships at home are often not exposed to good examples when they’re young.

Religion and spirituality play a big role in helping individuals deal with their emotions. Many believe that God makes us special by giving us this gift of empathy.

Culture and society shape what we consider normal and acceptable behavior.

How to improve your emotional intelligence

Improving your emotional quotient (EQ) is one of the most powerful ways to boost your overall happiness. EQ can be categorized into three different domains, or areas: motivation, engagement, and effectiveness.

Motivation refers to your desire to do things—you are motivated when you want to perform a task or action. For example, I would really wanted to go for a jog this morning, but I didn’t because I wasn’t feeling very well. My lack of motivation caused me to not exercise today.

Engagement means trying to do what you planned, and being able to persevere in spite of challenges. For instance, after I decided I wouldn’t run this morning, I spent the rest of the day doing other activities instead.

Effectiveness relates to how well you fulfill your obligations and meet deadlines. For example, even though I didn’t feel like exercising, I still made an effort to take good care of myself by eating healthily and going through my daily rituals.

Key tips for emotional intelligence

Developing your emotional literacy is an ongoing process that requires you to consistently work on it. While some people are born with higher levels of emotional intelligence, most of us have to work at it throughout our lives.

Research has shown that being emotionally intelligent can help improve relationships, career success and overall happiness in your life.

It’s also thought to be a fundamental tool in helping individuals cope better with stressors and challenges, and enhance their performance under pressure.

So how do you become more emotionally intelligent? Here are five easy ways to develop your EQ skills.

1. Practice acceptance and mindfulness

Emotionally intelligent people recognize and accept what they feel inside them. They don’t get carried away by emotions, because they know there’s another day tomorrow.

Practicing acceptance means letting go of wanting things to change or having control over situations that cannot be controlled. This helps you take a step back and re-evaluate the situation, instead of getting overwhelmed or taking unproductive actions.

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment non-judgmentally, without thinking about the past or planning for the future.

2. Use theory to understand emotion

Emotions arise from thoughts and feelings.

Some theories suggest that feeling angry makes you think about why someone else may feel hurt, which then motivates you to make changes or avoid certain behaviors.

Emotional awareness

A large part of emotional intelligence is being able to recognize emotions in others. You might be surprised by some of the things people seem to feel deeply about that you wouldn’t expect. For example, while some may think that money is what makes someone happy, a study found that people who reported having more money than they needed were almost three times as likely to say that they felt unhappy.

The reason for this seems counter-intuitive – it’s because those with lower income levels associate happiness with having enough money to meet their needs. The researchers referred to this as “neediness”– feeling unsatisfied due to lack of resources.

Another surprising finding was that one third of all participants said that they would rather have no health condition at all than suffer from a serious illness. In fact, several participants stated that they would prefer to go through life without ever knowing what it feels like to fail or to lose something important to them.

This doesn’t make sense unless you consider how most people perceive failure. Most people believe that failing means that you don’t do your job well, which can lead to feelings of shame or guilt. Or, if you’re not very good at something, then failing necessarily implies that you are less intelligent or talented than other people are.

Understanding your emotions

A large part of human happiness is due to how you deal with your emotions.

A lot of people get stuck thinking that their feelings are bad, so they avoid them. This creates a habit of not feeling anything because you do not want to feel something else later.

When you don’t feel things, you stop living — you stay alive, but you don’t live. You’re probably also very productive since you keep yourself busy, but you’re never really engaged in any one thing.

So, it makes sense then, that unhappy people are often unsuccessful at staying happy. They may even succeed for a short time, but eventually there’s another reason to be upset.

On the other hand, people who learn how to manage their emotions are more likely to enjoy life — they’re happier. And we all know people like this.

They’re successful not only at being happy themselves, but they help others become more aware of their emotional states and learn how to control theirs. These individuals have what psychologists call “emotional literacy.”

Emotional intelligence (or EQ) has been defined as the ability to identify your own emotions and those of others, and use these insights to function effectively in social situations and relate well to other people.

However, research indicates that it goes beyond just knowing what your own emotions are and understanding others’. It includes having effective strategies for regulating your emotions and improving relationships.

Identifying your feelings

It is very important to know what you feel before you can work on improving your emotional intelligence. There are several ways to do this.

The first way is by asking yourself if there have been any changes in how you feel about something or someone. For example, if you’re feeling depressed then ask yourself why you feel that way. Is it because of something said or done by another person? Or maybe it’s due to an event at work or home.

It could be anything really – it may not even matter what it is! No one else outside of you will know unless you tell them. So try to find out why you’re feeling down and fix that.

And don’t forget to look after yourself physically – eat well, get enough sleep and exercise regularly.

Another good way to identify your emotions is by using the emotion word list we mentioned earlier. When you’re having a difficult time figuring out what you’re feeling, take some time to reflect on these words.

This can help you connect all the parts of your brain which deal with emotions, so that you understand them better.

Managing your emotions

A smaller proportion of people have control over their emotional reactions than believe. According to research, only about one in three can actively manage their own emotions.

The other two thirds either deny that they had any feelings or are unable to identify what those feelings were. This makes sense because we often cannot recognize our own emotions until after they’ve passed.

We may also feel like we’re not allowed to show how we feel so we bottle up our inner experiences instead.

In fact, some psychologists suggest that being aware of your emotions is a learned skill and one that most adults do not develop.

So why should you care? Because strong emotion is a key part of human interaction.

Emotions help us bond with others, motivate us to achieve goals, and regulate us as individuals.

Without them, social relationships, work productivity, and self-control are difficult if not impossible.
