Being emotionally intelligent is not about being able to show your emotions for extended periods of time or keeping up fake smiles when you really don’t. That’s actually considered being in control, which isn’t emotional intelligence.

It’s also not acting like someone who has no feelings whatsoever. It’s understanding how your actions and behaviors affect others and it’s acknowledging that these effects are mostly negative.

So what is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence (or EI) refers to our ability to recognize, understand, manage, and use our own emotions as well as those of other people.

This includes knowing why we feel a certain way and being able to adjust our behavior to influence how we’re perceived by others. It also means being aware of our own needs and desires and figuring out how to satisfy them while still meeting the demands of others.

So what are we talking about when we refer to emotional intelligence (EI)? And why should you care if you have high levels of it or not?

Emotional quotient, also known as EQ, comes from two main sources: your innate ability to recognize and manage your emotions and how well you regulate your own emotions.

With regard to the first component, some people are just more emotionally intelligent than others. Some people seem to understand that sometimes things happen for no reason and they’ll probably be feeling sad tomorrow, so they learn to accept this and move on.

Others may get easily upset by such things and can take them very seriously. They might overreact in the opposite way by experiencing feelings of calmness instead.

Some people seem to gain strength and confidence from experiences that typically make other people feel bad – for example, by speaking their mind or telling a joke that most people don’t like.

Other individuals derive pleasure and satisfaction from doing things that usually do not yield positive results, because they know what needs to be done and how to do it.

This doesn’t mean that they enjoy hurting or sacrificing themselves for others, but they’re conscious of the fact that certain actions will only backfire and could cost them something important, so they normally choose not to engage in these types of behaviors.

On the contrary, someone with low emotional intelligence often lacks self-awareness.

Skills of emotional intelligence

One of the most important skills to have as an individual is emotional intelligence (EI). This is not your normal ‘self-awareness’ or ‘ability to identify emotions in others’, it goes much deeper than that.

It focuses on how you manage and cope with your own feelings and those of other people. It also includes recognizing and understanding why someone else may be feeling a certain way at a given time.

Skills like these help us understand what motivates different individuals and helps us relate to them. In our society where technology has advanced beyond recognition, this can be particularly helpful.

You will find that many professionals – from doctors to CEOs – are now being judged on their level of emotional literacy. They look for clues about who they are through conversations and interactions and compare these against past versions of themselves.

If you want to advance in your career then looking into ways to improve yours is essential. Here we will discuss some easy steps to develop your EI.

Factors that affect emotional intelligence

One of the most important things to know about emotional intelligence is that it can be trained or learned. This means you can spend time developing your skills in understanding and controlling your emotions.

Many professionals develop their emotional literacy through education programs such as psychology or social work degrees, but anyone can learn something from someone who is more emotionally intelligent than they are.

That person could be a friend, family member, colleague or even TV show or movie character!

It’s not just important to have strong relationships, it’s essential for success in business, school, career and life. We all have our own personal strengths and weaknesses, and being able to identify and understand our own feelings and those of others helps us function well.

Research shows that people who are highly emotionally intelligent are happier and healthier than people who aren’t. They may also earn better money because of this.

Taking care of your emotional intelligence

Over the past few years, there has been a growing emphasis in psychology and other mental health fields to emphasize something called emotional intelligence (EI).

Many believe that having high levels of EI can have profound positive effects on your life, both professionally and personally.

This is not to say that people with low levels of empathy are without feelings or suffer from social phobia for example, but that they manage their emotions more effectively than those who are highly empathic.

There are many theories about why this is, some saying it’s due to genetics, while others claim it develops through experiences and interactions with family and friends.

Whatever the case may be, research shows that higher levels of EI are associated with better overall happiness and well-being, as well as greater success in relationships and career.

It also seems to help improve self-confidence and performance in school and work. This makes sense, considering that we spend a lot of time at home and at work interacting with others, so how you handle yourself and others’ reactions to you is important.

Creating an environment that fosters emotional intelligence

Recent studies show that being emotionally intelligent is one of the most significant factors in your career success. What are we talking about here?

Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to our ability to recognize, understand, and manage our emotions.

It looks at how well you regulate your emotion, what emotions you use in certain situations, and whether those emotions help you achieve your goals.

There are many theories about why having high EI is important, but no matter which theory is true, it can only be improved by practicing.

That’s why investing in your emotional skills is so crucial – they can be learned and practiced.

In this article, we will talk about some ways to develop your emotional literacy- including using time effectively, understanding other people’s emotions, managing stress, and more.

But before we get into all of that, let us look at the differences between emotional and non-emotional intelligences.

Developing your emotional intelligence

So, how do you develop your emotional intelligence? There are many ways to achieve this. One of the easiest is by practicing self-awareness. This means paying more attention to what you feel and why you feel it.

It’s easy to assume that other people don’t have as much emotion as you do, but that isn’t always true. We all have our own set of emotions we deal with, and we can be very influenced by others’ feelings.

For example, if someone close to you gets divorced, they may find it hard to talk for weeks or even months after. If this happens to you, make an effort to speak to them soon afterwards.

Another way to practice self-awareness is by recognizing and acknowledging your emotions. For instance, when you wake up in the morning, ask yourself whether you were able to sleep well. If yes, then congratulations! But if not, take a moment to think about what might have been keeping you awake.

Could it be something you’re worried about at work? Something you’re struggling to resolve with a friend? Or could it be because you’re feeling stressed out and overwhelmed?

By being aware of the reasons behind your sleeping patterns, you will begin to understand yourself better.

How to be more emotional intelligent

Being emotionally intelligent means recognizing your emotions and understanding what triggers them for you. It also means knowing how to manage your emotions so they do not control you or keep you too stressed out.

Emotional intelligence is something that everyone has, but some people use it much better than others do. We all have our different levels of self-awareness, self-regulation, and relationship management depending on our own personal skills in these areas.

Some people are just plain smart about their feelings whereas other people may need to work harder to understand their reactions.

It can be hard to know if you’re an overuser of emotion or if you’re not using your brain enough. Some people seem to lose their temper easily, while others remain calm even when things go wrong.

Learn to laugh

A good sense of humor is one of the most important things people have. Comedians are always being praised for their jokes, and comedians make big money doing nothing but telling funny stories.

Everyone has a story that they can tell and get laughs out of. Even if you cannot think of anything funny, you can try talking about yourself or events in your life with some humorous anecdotes.

You do not need to be very witty to enjoy storytelling with laughter, however. Anyone can start telling funny stories and then work up from there!

It does not matter whether the listener already knows what the joke is before it is told, so feel free to play off other peoples’ jokes too. Humor comes in many forms, so do not limit yourself to only jokes.
