Recent studies have determined that emotional intelligence is just as important as cognitive, or thinking, intelligence. Some even suggest it be considered more important than IQ because it impacts many areas of your life outside of academic settings.

This comes as no surprise given all the times we encounter challenges in our daily lives that require us to deal with emotions. For example, if you work for a company that has recently been acquired, then dealing with the loss of an organization and team can be quite difficult.

If you are married, chances are you will experience some form of conflict at least once a week. If you parent children, there are never really any clear-cut solutions when they get upset. And unless you’ve trained yourself to control your own emotions, everything from giving up on relationships to becoming a violent person is possible.

Emotional quotient (EQ), also known as emotional intelligence (or EI), correlates with how well you manage your emotions and relate to others. Therefore, it is seen as a key factor in achieving success and happiness in life.

There are several theories about what makes someone have high EQ, but none of them have fully explained away the differences in people’s levels. However, researchers do agree that being able to recognize and understand one’s own feelings and those of other people is a fundamental part of having high EQ.

Factors that affect emotional intelligence

There are several factors that can influence someone’s emotional quotient (EQ). These include genetics, early experiences, socialization, culture, lifestyle, religion, career, and more.

Certain behaviors and attitudes help develop your EQ. For example, being able to recognize and identify your emotions is a key factor in having higher EQ.

Also, practicing gratitude and forgiveness helps you feel happier. Learning how to manage your emotions takes work, but it is possible for anyone to do.

Research shows that people with high levels of emotional intelligence are better at relationships, job performance, and health than individuals with lower EQ.

So what about Iq?

I should mention here that some sources use “emotional intelligence” as an alternative term for “intelligent personality.” This article uses the terms interchangeably though.

The gap between IQ and EQ

People with high emotional intelligence are not always recognized for their skills, but they’re actually considered more successful than those who have higher quantitative intelligence — also known as “IQ.”

Studies show that being able to read other people’s emotions is just as important as having lots of math or science knowledge. In fact, some experts believe it can be even more crucial in creating success.

Emotional intelligence has been linked to a number of positive outcomes, including:

Lower rates of workplace violence and conflict

Higher employee engagement and productivity

Increased job satisfaction

More satisfying relationships

With all these benefits, it’s no wonder employers are seeking out candidates with strong emotional capabilities.

But while most professionals acknowledge the importance of social skills, few talk about how developing them could help you climb the ladder at work.

Ways to improve your EQ

Over the past few years, emotional intelligence has become one of the most popular psychology theories. While there is no clear definition what emotional quotient (or “emotional” as some call it) means, experts agree that we are all born with certain levels of emotional intelligence.

Some people have higher levels than others though. A person with high emotional intelligence will show evidence of understanding and control over their emotions. They may also use these feelings to motivate themselves towards achieving goals.

There are several strategies you can implement to increase your emotional intelligence. This includes practicing mindfulness, learning how to recognize and manage your own emotions, and using empathy to understand other people’s perspectives.

You can also learn about and work on your emotional strengths- those qualities such as kindness or optimism that make you more sympathetic and likeable. In fact, research shows that being able to identify and work on your strengths can help you achieve your personal and professional goals.

Embrace change

Change is an integral part of life. When things are not changing, however, this can create stress and worry. Work is a constant source of changes – whether it be due to staff shifts, new projects, or even new departments or positions.

As a leader, you will need to deal with change for your team. Changing jobs can be stressful for individuals, but if you get into a good rhythm early, it tends to go easier.

Teach people to be authentic

People with high emotional intelligence are aware of how they feel in various situations. They are able to recognize their emotions, identify what is causing them, and then use that information to make informed decisions.

This ability to identify and understand your own feelings is referred to as self-awareness. You will find it helpful when trying to deal with others or know what makes someone else unhappy.

By being aware of your emotions, you can avoid making overly dramatic statements or taking things too seriously. You will also have to acknowledge that some humor is needed to bring down the tension in an uncomfortable situation.

It’s important to note here that having low emotional intelligence isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We all need help from time to time!

But if you want to achieve success and thrive in life, you must develop your emotional intelligence.

You will probably learn this skill by doing things such as reminding yourself why you should be proud of a certain achievement, telling yourself to relax and enjoy the moment, and using effective emotion regulation strategies.

There are many ways to improve your emotional intelligence, but no one method is better than another. Unfortunately, none of us is always going to be smart about everything so there is not really anything you can do to fix that.

What you can work on is your overall EQ level which includes your understanding of other people’s emotions, and your ability to control your own emotions.

Be authentic

We’ve discussed before what makes someone intelligent or not, but there is one thing that can sometimes get in the way of people who may seem smart at first. This is emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence (or EQ for short) refers to how well you understand your emotions and other people’s emotions.

It is also referred to as “other-focused empathy.” In this case, you want to know if others are feeling good, happy, or sad and why they are.

This is different from personality, which is just about whether someone is introverted or extroverted, etc.

Personality traits show what position in life you were born with, whereas IQ shows whether you learned it through education or natural talent.

With EQ, though, it is determined by whether you use your brain to identify your own feelings and those of others and apply them towards helping others feel better and yourself feel happier.

Does anyone else think that having to do with food is kind of gross? Like, eating foods because you like eating them or because society says you should?

No, me neither. But apparently, some people have bigger brains than others do!

That means that, even when hungry, they won’t necessarily eat everything in sight because their brains don’t process food the same way ours do.

Make eye contact

Making direct eye contact with someone is one of the first ways that we learn about them. Yours are your most powerful tools for communication, so why would you not use them? When you make direct eye contact with someone, it shows that you care about their answer and what they say.

It also gives them the chance to read your expression and see how you feel about what they said. This way, they can tell if you were interested in what they had to say or if you simply looked at them with indifference.

Making direct eye contact isn’t just important between two people, it is crucial when talking to anyone. The more aware you are of other person’s emotions, the better able you will be to communicate and understand them.

Everyone has different levels of emotional intelligence, which makes it hard to compare like things. But because making eye contact is such an integral part of communicating, there are some tests to determine yours.

Tone of your voice

Speaking with a low tone of voice is usually considered to be boring or even annoying, whereas using higher tones is thought of as powerful and engaging. But what if we told you that having a lower tone than normal is an effective way to improve your emotional intelligence?

In fact, there’s some evidence to suggest that people who use a lower register are actually more likely to get along with others, experience less stress, and achieve their goals more quickly.

The reason for this is because they’re less likely to pick up signals about how other people feel from their vocal style. This can make it harder to recognize true feelings, which sets off alarm bells in your own mind and body and distracts you from solving the problem at hand.

When you think about it, communication is a pretty crucial part of successful relationships.

What you say

what is emotional intelligence (eq) how does it compare to iq

A few years ago, there was a lot of talk about emotional intelligence or EQ. Since then, it has mostly disappeared. People seem to have given up.

Most people agree that having emotional intelligence is important, but they disagree over what emotions are and how to use them. There’s even some disagreement over whether being smart in ways that include emotion is better than being just intelligent.

So why all the confusion? That depends partly on what kind of emotional intelligence we’re talking about.

There are three main types. They’re called self-awareness, empathy, and management of emotions.

Self-Awareness refers to your ability to recognize your own feelings and those of other people. This includes understanding your strengths and weaknesses as well as others’.

It also means knowing which emotions are appropriate for different situations. For example, someone who eats only raw vegetables will probably not enjoy watching a movie with lots of blood and gore.

On the other hand, most people love horror movies! So if she wanted to see one, she would need to find something scary that she could watch without getting sick.

This isn’t limited to humans – dogs learn how to read their owners’ emotions from observing and copying behaviors. When they notice things that make their owner unhappy, they stop doing whatever made him/her angry before and instead try to calm down or change the subject.
